Summary

Tejano is a Texas Mexican American popular-music field whose history includes orchestras, accordion traditions, keyboards, brass, song and dance. In a broad sense the word can describe regional music made by Tejanos; in a narrower industry sense it points to the modern band sound that became especially visible in the late twentieth century. Those uses overlap but are not identical. The music's identity lies in a changing community and its creative choices, not in a fixed percentage of Mexican and US influences. [1]

Contemporary and trending

Tejano continues through bands, recordings, dances, community events and an active historical repertory. Its major commercial visibility in the 1980s and 1990s is part of the past, while current musicians and audiences remain more than a nostalgia market. Performers can use electronic keyboards, accordion, horns or different combinations depending on the project. Women singers and instrumentalists have shaped the field across periods, not only during one star's career. Local social occasions remain significant even when national industry attention shifts elsewhere.

History

Texas Mexican orchestras developed through exchanges among regional song, dance music, jazz-related arranging and other US popular resources. Leaders such as Beto Villa, Little Joe and Sunny Ozuna contributed different approaches. Onda Chicana connected musical choices with changing Mexican American public identity. Later synthesizers, video-era presentation and new recording conditions helped shape the sound often called Tejano in the narrower sense. Conjunto remained an overlapping but distinct tradition. The history is therefore a set of simultaneous regional practices rather than one smooth evolution from folk to pop. [1]

Musical characteristics

Listen for the interaction of a lead voice with a dance-oriented rhythm section, keyboard textures and, in some groups, horn or accordion responses. Repertory can include cumbias, polkas, romantic songs and other forms. Arrangements may be tightly polished while retaining local phrasing and accent. A vocal line can sound intimate even within a large band, and the return of a familiar chorus can invite collective recognition. Instrumentation alone is not enough to classify every track: the performance network and the community's own use of the label matter.

Geography and communities

The map gives South and Central Texas a broad connected heartland, including the Rio Grande Valley, San Antonio, the Coastal Bend and neighboring towns. Northern Mexican and US Southwest fields represent durable exchange and adoption, with a lighter Midwestern migrant landscape. These circles do not imply that every Texas Latino musician makes Tejano or that all Tejanos share one taste. They show regional institutions, family listening and dance circuits whose continuity is obscured by separate pins for a few recording stars.

Artists

Little Joe y La Familia, Sunny and the Sunliners, Laura Canales, Selena y Los Dinos, Mazz, La Mafia and Emilio Navaira offer contrasting routes into the field. Earlier singers such as Lydia Mendoza and Chelo Silva help place later visibility in a longer history without assigning all their work to the same modern band style.
