Summary

Puxa is a Santomean popular dance-band genre developed through the conjuntos. Local melodic and linguistic practice interacts with several Atlantic musical resources, producing a field distinct from a generic Congolese Rumba or Angolan Semba category. [1] [2]

Contemporary and trending

The conjunto legacy remains part of contemporary Santomean professional identity. In 2025 Bill Lima described continuing work with África Negra and other bands alongside a separate Bulawê project. That versatility illustrates a connected musical world without assigning every performance by those musicians to Puxa. [3]

History

Bialoborska distinguishes locally created conjunto genres from earlier social repertoires and later computer-based production. Puxa developed through changing acoustic/electric ensembles rather than simply copying one foreign style. Os Leonenses and Sangazuza belong to the wider formation alongside África Negra. [1] [2]

Musical characteristics

Bass, interlocking guitars, drums/percussion and collective vocal work support sustained dancing. Forro melodic and textual practices interact with resources including Semba, Coladeira and Congolese guitar music. The mixture varies across bands; one arrangement does not define every conjunto genre. [2]

São Tomé’s towns, communities and professional networks provide the main connected landscape. Conjunto circulation also links Príncipe and Santomean migrant publics. International tours extend public visibility without giving every tour destination the same depth as the islands. [2] [4]
