Summary

Dinka song is an inclusive repertoire field of sung historical, autobiographical, social and other verbal expression in South Sudan. Ox-praise, initiation, women’s and communal songs have different purposes and practitioners. The category recognizes those connected expressive worlds without proposing a uniform sound or one preference for every Dinka person. [1] [2]

Naomi Pendle and Abraham Diing Akoi’s 2021–24 collaborative research in Jonglei and Warrap shows songs participating in current debate about hunger, responsibility and suffering. Singing can criticize armed actors, but can also redirect blame toward families. Musical expression is therefore not automatically either emancipatory protest or official persuasion. [2]

History

Songs transmit accounts of people and events across generations, but are interpretations of history rather than transparent factual archives. Zoe Cormack’s work on ethnographic collections stresses the need to understand the circumstances in which texts were preserved.
