Summary

Nagauta is a Japanese vocal and shamisen tradition strongly associated with kabuki dance, also performed and studied as concert music in its own right. Its name is often translated as long song, but length alone does not identify the practice. Singers and thin-necked shamisen players shape a changing sequence of melodic, rhythmic and dramatic ideas. Related genres

Nagauta belongs to the wider world of shamisen music but differs from narrative traditions such as gidayu and from the particular styles of tokiwazu and kiyomoto. It should also be distinguished from noh chant, whose vocal and theatrical organization is different. Kabuki uses several musical resources, so hearing shamisen on a kabuki stage does not identify every passage as nagauta. Tsugaru shamisen offers another contrasting tradition with a different regional history and attack. These relationships help listeners recognize shared instruments without collapsing their repertories and social worlds into one genre.
