Summary

África Negra is a band from São Tomé and Príncipe associated with Santomean puxa. Its guitar-led dance music connects local grooves with the circulation of African popular music across the Atlantic islands.[1]

History

The band became a central name in São Tomé's post-independence popular music. Recordings from earlier decades reached new listeners through the Antologia reissues, whose second volume followed the first in 2024. That renewed circulation should be distinguished from the date of the original performances.[1]

Music and repertoire

Interlocking guitar parts, bass, percussion and vocals make music for sustained social dancing. The puxa connection sits alongside Congolese rumba and soukous influences, reflecting musical traffic with Central Africa. Rhythm guitarist Leonildo Barros's account of dance venues places the music in a local social setting, while the reissues show how the same recordings can enter new international listening networks.[2]

Selected recordings in MuGlobe:

Members and collaborators

The historical recordings prominently feature singer João Seria and guitarist Leonildo Barros. The second anthology is dedicated to Seria, who died in 2023. Its credits also identify Armando Tito and Sergio Fonseca, helping listeners distinguish the people heard on particular sessions from a single permanent lineup.[1]
