Summary
The Bubu Gang was the Brooklyn ensemble that developed live and recorded bubu with Sierra Leonean singer Janka Nabay. The collaboration joined his rhythmic knowledge with musicians from the city's experimental music scene.[1]
History
The group took shape through encounters at Zebulon and rehearsals in Greenpoint. Guitarist Tony Lowe helped start the collaboration; drummer Jon Leland's electronic kit made it possible to move beyond prerecorded accompaniment. Lowe later left for film work.[1]
Music and repertoire
The ensemble used bass, drums, keyboards, guitar and layered voices to translate bubu into an electric band language. En Yay Sah appeared in 2012, followed by Build Music in 2017. The latter's release notes place that music within Nabay's experience of migration, cultural advocacy and artistic reinvention. Repetition and dance energy coexist with themes of unease and attachment to home.[2]
Selected recordings in MuGlobe:
- Janka Nabay and the Bubu Gang live at 53 Eagle Street on August 21, 2010 — Bubu.
- Janka Nabay & the Bubu Gang Live at Balliceaux 6/5/14 — Bubu.
- Janka Nabay and the Bubu Gang at Global Union — Bubu.
Members and collaborators
The early six-person lineup brought Nabay together with vocalist Boshra AlSaadi, drummer Jon Leland, bassist Jason McMahon, keyboardist Michael Gallope and guitarist Doug Shaw. Shaw's interest in S. E. Rogie added another connection to Sierra Leonean music. The label's formation account also places Skeletons among the musicians' overlapping projects.[1]
