Summary
Phyno is a Nigerian rapper and producer whose music centers Igbo expression within hip-hop and wider Afrobeats production. His work draws on highlife, gospel and the listening culture in which he grew up.[1]
Life and career
He first built a career producing for other Nigerian artists before becoming a recording performer in his own right. In the interview, he describes cultural identification as a positive resource: using Igbo allows him to represent where he comes from while addressing audiences beyond that language community.[1]
Music and style
He links his musical development to a highlife neighborhood and locally heard gospel. Rap, melody and a producer's attention to the beat meet within that background. On Full Time Job, indigenous rap remains central while collaborations introduce highlife, amapiano, R&B and other textures.[1][2]
Works and performances
'Do I' and Full Time Job (2024) provide a useful pairing of single and album. The album includes 'Men Don Show Face' with Flavour, 'Deep' with FAVE and 'Back Outside' with Cheque. These different settings show how local-language delivery can remain constant while production and collaborators change.[1][2]
