Summary

Cavalo-marinho is a Pernambuco popular performance tradition joining dramatic characters, dancing, sung verse and a small musical ensemble called the banco. The catalogue entry concerns that integrated musical practice, rather than treating any rabeca tune as cavalo-marinho. [1]

Contemporary and trending

The Estrela de Ouro transmission project documented by Iphan in 2025 brings learning and community continuity into view. Public presentations and workshops coexist with the longer dramatic event; a short stage selection can reveal the music while omitting much of the play’s social and narrative organization. [2]

History

Rural workers’ lives, relations of work and authority, remembered experience and comic invention are enacted through its characters. Mata Norte and Recife-area communities are connected by migration and performance. The tradition is not an unchanged survival sealed off from modern town life. [1]

Musical characteristics

Rabeca, pandeiro, reco-reco and ganzá form the documented banco. Instrumental passages and songs guide scenes and bodily action; the sequence of characters and dances gives the music its dramatic function. The bowed rabeca is an instrument with its own local history, not merely an incomplete violin. [2]

Geography and communities

The field concentrates on the Aliança–Condado–Mata Norte network with a lighter Recife-area continuation. Its cultural attachment is substantial within participating communities, while broad commercial listening is more limited. The map therefore avoids giving the tradition a uniform statewide maximum. [1]

Artists

Cavalo Marinho Estrela de Ouro is the community institution foregrounded in the consulted transmission project. Masters, bank musicians, dancers and character performers contribute complementary knowledge; naming a single singer cannot describe the whole musical organization. [2]

Related genres

Maracatu de baque solto, Coco and Forró pé-de-serra share aspects of regional life but have different performance structures. A rabeca musician can participate in several worlds; that does not make their repertoires interchangeable. [1]

Hotspot mushrooms

A focused community and dramatic-performance landscape with lower broad listening reach; neighbouring countryside belongs without making all Pernambuco equally intense.

The fields express editorial judgments about relative musical affinity and reach, not measured audience shares. Radius is the zero edge of a linear fade; same-genre overlaps combine by maximum.
