Contemporary and trending
The catalogue is being expanded for all-day listening: recent discovery is prioritized, and good older recordings remain playable. Historical labels describe age rather than excluding locally matched performances.
Fantom Island Music’s 2024 public carol recording documents the Salvation Army and island churches singing together in Jamestown. Older Gospel Sing performances remain labelled as archive material. The island’s Creative Saint Helena arts activity is a useful discovery route, but its secular choir and civic songs are not automatically Gospel. [1]
History
Graeme Beckett’s recordings identify a Gospel Sing at the Baptist Chapel, Jamestown, on 2 November 2013, with named local participants and accompanists. Government and local reporting independently place Beckett in the island’s musical life. Those dates describe the performances, not contemporary new releases. [2]
Musical characteristics
Congregational hymns, solo Gospel singing and public carols with brass accompaniment reflect different island settings. The collection preserves focused Chapel performances and an explicitly local public Christmas gathering. A church’s name or a hymn tune named St Helena is not enough to establish this geography.
Geography and communities
One compact island field represents Saint Helena’s connected church communities and Jamestown’s public singing. It has no intended extension to Ascension, Tristan da Cunha, South Carolina, California or Indonesia. The exact authored Saint Helena region scopes playback more tightly than the soft field edge.
Artists
St Helena Gospel Sing; uploader: Graeme Beckett, Tracey Thomas with Gareth Drabble, Tammy Williams, Tracey Thomas, St Helena Salvation Army band and community singers. Credits refer to the particular recordings below; a named uploader is not assumed to be the performer. These examples introduce a scene and do not assign an artist’s entire mixed repertoire to Gospel.
Representative performances
The examples distinguish video publication from original repertoire and recording dates. Unknown dates remain unknown. Explicitly archival examples retain their age labels and remain playable alongside worthwhile recent material.
