Summary

Banky W is a Nigerian singer and songwriter known for R&B with a Nigerian musical identity. Romantic songs, dance-oriented recordings and work with other artists connect his singing career with the development of modern Nigerian pop.[1]

Life and career

In a 2010 interview he recalled singing in school and church, then beginning serious recording while at university in New York around 2002. Early promotion involved selling CDs directly and singing in local businesses. He later left engineering employment to pursue music more fully.[2]

Music and style

He has described his approach as R&B with Nigerian flavor. The contrast between 'Strong Thing' and 'Lagos Party' reflects a repertoire addressing both intimate listening and social dancing. His interviews also emphasize the practical networks behind music-making: supportive friends, recording investment and an industry capable of sustaining artists.[1][2]

Works and performances

'Strong Thing', 'Lagos Party' and 'Ay Mami' are representative recordings discussed in the 2010 interview. Through Empire Mates Entertainment, he also worked with Wizkid, whose early solo albums helped bring another generation of Nigerian singing to wider publics.[2][3]
