Summary
Bob Marley (1945–1981) was a Jamaican singer and songwriter central to the international circulation of reggae and roots reggae. His songs combine spiritual reflection, social criticism, intimacy and dance.[1]
Life and career
Born Robert Nesta Marley in Nine Miles, St. Ann, he later made Kingston's Trench Town a formative musical home. Joe Higgs helped develop his singing alongside Bunny Wailer and Peter Tosh. Their work with the Wailers grew from Jamaican recording networks into an international career with Island Records.[1]
Music and style
Storytelling from rural life, American soul and vocal harmony, Rastafarian thought and Jamaican rhythmic invention all informed his writing. His career spanned ska and rocksteady before the roots-reggae sound associated with Bob Marley and the Wailers. Bass and drums supported a flexible vocal delivery that could carry reassurance, anger or collective resolve.[1]
Works and performances
Catch a Fire, Burnin’, Exodus and Uprising trace major stages of his recorded work. Songs such as 'One Love' and 'No Woman, No Cry' reached audiences far beyond Jamaica. His continuing musical influence is also documented by artists including Janka Nabay, who named Marley among his inspirations.[1][2]
