Summary

Mogwai is a Scottish group closely associated with post-rock. Layered guitars, keyboards and large changes in intensity often carry the musical argument without a conventional lead vocal.[1]

The Bad Fire was released in January 2025. Songs including 'God Gets You Back', 'Hi Chaos' and 'Lion Rumpus' offer a later listening point in a catalogue that also includes soundtrack work.[2]

History

Formed in Glasgow in 1995, Mogwai developed across studio albums, touring and music for the screen. The group's own Rock Action label became part of the infrastructure supporting that work.[3][1]

Music and repertoire

The arrangements use repetition, instrumental color and contrast to create shape. Sub Pop's account of Rave Tapes places synthesizers and interlocking patterns alongside the more forceful guitars associated with the group's earlier reputation. This changing balance shows how rock instrumentation can support extended instrumental forms and electronic detail. It is a useful musical connection to post-rock's concern with texture and scale, rather than evidence that all the group's records follow one crescendo formula.[1]

Members and collaborators

Stuart Braithwaite, Dominic Aitchison, Martin Bulloch and Barry Burns form the quartet documented during The Bad Fire period. Work with outside producers and on film scores has provided further settings for the ensemble's sound.[4]
