Summary
Marinês was a Brazilian singer closely associated with xaxado, baião and Forró. Known as the Rainha do Xaxado, she was a major female voice in the formation and continued renewal of Northeastern popular music.[1]
Life and career
Her career developed with accordionist Abdias and through contact with Luiz Gonzaga. Performing as Marinês e sua Gente, she brought songs, dance and a recognizable stage identity to radio, records and live audiences. Her career also reached later generations through collaborations and tribute projects.[1]
Music and style
Her repertoire moves across xote, baião, xaxado, coco and other forms. Direct delivery, humor and double meaning are part of that world, alongside affectionate and regional themes. Her work is a reminder that women helped define Traditional Forró from its commercially formative years.
Works and performances
'Peba na Pimenta' and 'Pisa na Fulô' are representative recordings. Elba Ramalho's involvement in a later Marinês project makes the intergenerational connection concrete. Modern performances of this repertoire continue the tradition without making every new version identical to the original arrangement.[1][2]
