Summary

Castanheiro is a Pernambuco-born singer and percussionist whose career helped build the Forró scene in São Paulo. His work connects performing, recording, venues and broadcasting within a migrant city's musical life.[1]

Life and career

The Instituto Moreira Salles documents his work with Pedro Sertanejo from the 1960s and recordings with artists including Luiz Gonzaga, Dominguinhos and Anastácia. This history shows São Paulo as a place where forró was actively made and organized, not simply received from elsewhere.[1]

Music and style

Singing and percussion place Castanheiro within the living Traditional Forró world. His 2023 IMS performance joined his band with members of Forró das Minas, adding pífano and rabeca to the ensemble. Such instrumentation expands the familiar trio image without severing the tradition.

Works and performances

The IMS programme includes his 'Vendedor de Castanha' and 'Cheguei no Baile'. The documentary Castanheiro do Forró, directed by Alfredo Bello, offers another route into the musician's history. These sources connect individual songs with the practical work of sustaining a scene.[1]
