Summary
Mariah Carey is an American singer, songwriter and producer whose work connects pop and contemporary R&B. Her vocal range and melodic writing are closely linked parts of her musical identity.[1]
Life and career
She wrote 'Vision of Love' while still a teenager. That song introduced a recording career in which writing and co-writing remained central. Her induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2022 recognized a catalogue extending from early love songs to widely performed holiday music.[1]
Music and style
Long melodic lines, ornamented singing and a wide vocal register distinguish her performances. Collaborations with artists and producers including Jermaine Dupri, Missy Elliott and Boyz II Men connect that singing with different R&B and popular-song settings. Her compositions have also been performed or sampled by later singers and rappers, extending their life beyond her own recordings.[1]
Works and performances
'Vision of Love', 'Fantasy', 'Honey', 'One Sweet Day' with Boyz II Men, and 'We Belong Together' are representative songs. 'All I Want for Christmas Is You' became an enduring part of the holiday repertoire. These works illustrate the importance of songwriting alongside the vocal display for which she is known.[1]
