Summary

Dub is a Jamaican-rooted practice of composing and performing with recorded sound, especially by reshaping rhythm tracks through mixing, subtraction, echo, reverberation and altered sonic space. It is also a genre and a sound-system culture. A dub version may let a voice appear only in fragments while bass and drums move to the foreground. The mixing desk becomes an expressive instrument rather than a neutral device for balancing a completed song. Its history belongs to particular musicians, engineers and listeners, not merely to a collection of electronic effects. [1]

Contemporary and trending

Dub remains active in studios, sound systems, live mixing, bands and electronic production. Some practitioners work closely with reggae rhythm tracks; others extend the approach into different musical languages. A digital plugin can imitate an effect, but the musical judgment of when to remove, repeat or return a sound remains central. Contemporary scenes include community-built speaker systems and highly technical studio work. Those are related ways of organizing sound, space and participation rather than a simple divide between live authenticity and electronic manipulation.

History

Jamaican versioning, sound-system competition and studio experimentation in the late 1960s and 1970s created decisive conditions. Engineers and producers discovered that subtraction and reconfiguration could make a rhythm track a new event. King Tubby, Lee Perry and other figures developed distinctive approaches, while musicians' original performances remained essential raw material. Caribbean migration and imported records helped build British scenes, which later developed their own producers and systems. Listen to the depth and movement of the bass, the space around a snare hit and the way an echo may continue after the original sound disappears. A horn phrase can become a distant trace, or a voice a rhythmic interruption. Reverb changes the imagined room; filtering can make a part approach or recede. The most effective passage is not necessarily the one with the most effects. A sudden dry return can be powerful because the listener has learned the track's changing geography. Sound-system playback adds a bodily scale that headphones cannot fully reproduce.

Geography and communities
