Arirang

Summary

Arirang is a large family of Korean songs and singing practices, united more by recurring words, cultural associations and related patterns than by one fixed melody. Regional versions differ substantially, and familiar national arrangements represent only part of that variety. The song family can express longing, separation, solidarity, celebration or personal experience according to text and occasion. It belongs to both sides of the Korean peninsula and to Korean communities abroad. Related genres

Arirang sits within the wider field of Korean minyo but should not replace all regional folk song. It is different from pansori's long narrative form and from gagok's cultivated song cycles, despite shared performers or concert programs. Rock, jazz, orchestral and popular adaptations can draw on a familiar tune without becoming examples of an entire regional folk style. The term can also name festivals, institutions and unrelated works. In discovery, identifying the particular melody and treatment keeps its symbolic power connected to audible musical detail rather than allowing the title alone to do all the explanatory work.
