Summary

Canto cardenche is an unaccompanied vocal tradition associated with the Comarca Lagunera, especially Sapioriz in Durango and the Jimulco area of Coahuila. Interacting voices create a strongly expressive polyphonic texture.[1]

Contemporary and trending

Community transmission and newer projects coexist. Coro Acardenchado offers a deliberate contemporary reworking; it is presented alongside, rather than as a replacement for, the Cardencheros de Sapioriz tradition.[2]

History

The repertoire preserves rural memories and emotional experience through inherited songs. Its history should not be reduced to repeated claims that only one living group can perform it: teaching, women’s participation and new arrangements also matter.

Musical characteristics

The parts commonly described as primera, contralta and arrastre shape the texture. Staggered entries, sustained notes and expressive phrasing can make a small group sound much larger; instrumental backing is not necessary.

Geography and communities

The relatively compact field centres on connected Lagunera communities. The region also contains urban and popular music, so the map does not portray its whole population as a single traditional-song community.

Artists

Los Cardencheros de Sapioriz and Coro Acardenchado supply two distinct approaches. Their versions of “Al pie de un árbol” remain separate performances of the same song.

Related genres

Corrido; Mexican hip-hop.
