Janka Nabay
Summary
Ahmed Janka Nabay (1964–2018) was a Sierra Leonean singer who brought bubu into electronically produced popular music. His career connected Freetown's cassette culture with international recordings and performances alongside The Bubu Gang.[1]
Life and career
He grew up singing with relatives, lived in Makeni and later moved to Freetown. A successful audition using bubu opened opportunities for recording. His keyboard-based cassettes reached a broad Sierra Leonean audience, with songs including 'Dance to the Bubu', 'Lek U Culture' and 'Sabanoh'. War forced him to leave the country. After years in the United States, he returned to Sierra Leone in 2017; he died there on 2 April 2018.[1]
Music and style
Nabay retained bubu's insistent, interlocking rhythmic movement while changing its instrumental sound. His influences included reggae, Bob Marley and Michael Jackson, alongside the bubu he learned in childhood. Singing in Krio, Temne, English and Arabic connected cultural memory with a varied listening public.[2]
Works and performances
The Bubu King EP preceded the Luaka Bop albums En Yay Sah (2012) and Build Music (2017). The latter includes 'Santa Monica', 'Angbollieh' and 'Sabanoh 2017'. Its notes describe a musician combining attachment to his homeland with the contradictions of emigrant life, giving the dance music a personal and political dimension.[1][3]
