Summary

Banga is a southern Tunisian musical and ritual practice maintained by Black Tunisian communities, particularly in the Jerid. Percussion, collective participation and spirit relationships belong together; the term does not simply name an instrumental beat. Amira Hassnaoui’s ethnography treats it as a locally situated practice with its own custodians. [1]

Family and community work sustain Banga alongside public performance. Hassnaoui’s research foregrounds women’s often less visible contributions to organizing and maintaining ritual life. Those roles matter as much as the people who appear on a concert platform. History

The practice carries memories of slavery and Black Tunisian histories without reducing present participants to a single ancestral origin. Hassnaoui followed the Sidi Marzoug Chouchane community and the transmission of musical and ritual knowledge during fieldwork beginning in 2018. [1]

Musical characteristics

The documented ensemble includes the double-headed tabla drum, metal shakasheek clappers and the ceramic tangoura drum. Their combined rhythmic and timbral activity supports a collective event rather than an autonomous concert piece. Tozeur, Nefta and Metlaoui form a documented connected circuit.
