The group took shape through encounters at Zebulon and rehearsals in Greenpoint. Guitarist Tony Lowe helped start the collaboration; drummer Jon Leland's electronic kit made it possible to move beyond prerecorded accompaniment. Lowe later left for film work.<ref name="gang-label" />
