New page

== Summary ==
Fred Zindi is a Zimbabwean guitarist, singer, music writer and organizer whose career connects performing bands, [[Reggae|reggae]] promotion and the documentation of Zimbabwean popular music. He is also associated with music education and artist development.<ref name="zindi-interview">[https://gemnation.co.zw/fred-zindis-artistic-walk/ Terrence Mapurisana: Fred Zindi’s artistic walk, Gemnation interview]. Accessed 23 October 2026.</ref>

== Life and career ==
Band activity in Zimbabwe preceded further study and music-making in Britain. There he played with Stars of Liberty, which became Shaka after Louis Mhlanga joined. Back in Zimbabwe, his work included radio, live promotion and developing the Frontline Kids. The interview also recalls performing with Transit Crew.<ref name="zindi-interview" />

== Music and style ==
Guitar and voice connect his own performance practice with Zimbabwe's band scene. His sustained engagement with reggae included work around Aswad and relationships with visiting performers. Promotion, radio and band organization helped create occasions for that music to circulate, alongside his writing about local styles and musicians.<ref name="zindi-interview" />

== Works and performances ==
The Shaka recordings named in the interview include ''Zimbabwe on Fire'', ''Train of Freedom'' and ''Africa''. Frontline Kids projects include ''Children on the Frontline'', ''African Jive'' and ''Yarira Ngoma''. His book ''Roots Rocking in Zimbabwe'' appeared in 1985 and examines popular music's development, including [[Thomas Mapfumo]] and the revival of mbira-related music.<ref name="zindi-book">[https://africabib.org/rec.php?RID=047581298 AfricaBib: Roots Rocking in Zimbabwe, bibliographic record and abstract].
