New page

== Summary ==

Filin is a Cuban approach to song that developed in the 1940s, bringing the intimate voice-and-guitar world of trova into conversation with bolero, jazz harmony and a more conversational way of delivering a lyric. Its name adapts the English word ''feeling''. It identifies a particular creative movement and interpretive aesthetic, rather than every Cuban romantic song.

== Contemporary and trending ==

The founding musicians and many of the best-known recordings belong to the twentieth century, but their songs continue through later singers, recordings and personal reinterpretation. Pablo Milanés's filin recordings, Omara Portuondo's interpretations and newer performances provide different routes into the repertoire. The listening category therefore includes both historical performances and later versions, without treating a recent upload as a recent recording.<ref>[https://magazineampm.com/dando-la-nota-boleros-de-oro/ Boleros de Oro: a recording-based guide to Cuban song and filin], Magazine AM:PM, accessed 24 October 2026.</ref>

== History ==

Havana gatherings brought together José Antonio Méndez, César Portillo de la Luz, Ángel Díaz, Ñico Rojas, Rosendo Ruiz Quevedo, Frank Emilio, Elena Burke and Omara Portuondo, among others. The movement retained the importance of the word and the guitar while exploring richer chords, flexible phrasing and influences heard through records, radio and cinema. Méndez and Portillo became major composer-performers; their work also circulated well beyond Cuba.<ref>[https://directoriomusicacubana.com/?artista=jose-antonio-mendez José Antonio Méndez: musician biography], Directorio Música Cubana, accessed 24 October 2026.</ref><ref>[https://directoriomusicacubana.com/?artista=cesar-portillo-de-la-luz César Portillo de la Luz: biography and the composer's account of filin], Directorio Música Cubana, accessed 24 October 2026.</ref>

== Musical characteristics ==

A singer may seem to speak directly to one listener, stretching a phrase or placing it against the accompaniment. Jazz-related harmony, carefully shaped melodies and intimate texts are recurring resources. Guitar and piano are especially important, but small ensembles and orchestral arrangements also occur. A familiar filin song can receive a bolero or jazz interpretation; classification should follow the performance as well as its composition.

== Geography and communities ==

Havana is the principal historical centre, including the Cayo Hueso gathering network and later intimate performance spaces. The songs belong to a wider Cuban and international listening repertoire, not only to the neighbourhoods where the movement formed. The map uses an approximate Havana emphasis with broader access; it does not claim measured audience shares.
== Artists ==

José Antonio Méndez's ''La gloria eres tú'', ''Novia mía'' and ''Si me comprendieras'', and César Portillo de la Luz's ''Contigo en la distancia'' and ''Tú, mi delirio'' are useful starting points. Elena Burke, Omara Portuondo, Moraima Secada, Marta Valdés and Frank Domínguez reveal different singing and songwriting personalities. Valdés's ''Tú no sospechas'' and Domínguez's ''Tú me acostumbraste'' extend the musical conversation beyond the earliest group.<ref>[https://magazineampm.com/dando-la-nota-boleros-de-oro/ Boleros de Oro: repertoire, composers and interpreters], Magazine AM:PM, accessed 24 October 2026.</ref>
