New page

== Summary ==

Donegal fiddle music is a regional instrumental tradition with diverse local and personal styles, repertoires and bowing practices. It sits within Irish traditional music while retaining strong local and cross-channel connections.

== Contemporary and trending ==

Current recordings and concert performances keep this repertoire in circulation. The listening collection includes recent and worthwhile earlier versions, with performer and version credits retained; it does not treat an upload date as a composition date. John Doherty, Tommy Peoples, Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh, Ciarán Tourish and players documented by Cairdeas na bhFidiléirí offer distinct approaches.<ref>[https://donegalfiddlemusic.ie/donegalfiddlers/ Cairdeas na bhFidiléirí: Donegal fiddlers].</ref>

== History ==

House dances, family transmission, travelling musicians and exchanges with Scotland helped shape repertoires. Cairdeas na bhFidiléirí documents players and supports continuing learning and performance.<ref>[https://www.shetland.org/blog/shetland-in-7-fiddle-tunes-musical-journey Shetland in seven fiddle tunes].</ref>

== Musical characteristics ==

Listen for bow articulation, rhythmic attack, varied ornament and the treatment of reels, jigs, highlands and other tune types. No single description captures all Donegal players, and contemporary ensembles may arrange the material differently.

== Geography and communities ==

Donegal’s connected rural and town networks form the core, extending through Derry and wider northwestern and Scottish contacts. The field identifies repertoire relationships rather than an administrative claim or the identity of every resident.<ref>[https://donegalfiddlemusic.ie/donegalfiddlers/ Cairdeas na bhFidiléirí: Donegal fiddlers].</ref>
