The repertoire includes new composition as well as adaptation and transmission. Alsarah's work provides one documented diaspora reinterpretation, described in the Carnegie Hall teaching context as East African retro-pop. That creative treatment is related to community celebration singing without standing for every contemporary version. The repertoire's history cannot adequately be written as the emergence of a few exceptional women into an otherwise wholly male musical world. Malik centers performers' accounts and the negotiations through which they work with gender, social standing and media. The national inventory also differentiates village and urban texts. Unison or responsive singing, clapping and percussion—including daluka accompaniment in documented settings—support a repertoire where verbal directness, imagery and social address matter. Wedding and naming-party contexts help explain who performs and for whom. Stage or studio reinterpretation can change the arrangement and public without removing the underlying relationship to women's composition. == Geography and communities ==

The strongest field follows Greater Khartoum and the central Sudanese social networks documented ethnographically. Lighter Nile and town-connected fields acknowledge wider recognized circulation while avoiding the assumption that every community across Sudan uses one women's repertoire. Professional women singers, local celebrants and composers all contribute to the field. Malik's three-performer study deliberately preserves differing experiences and forms of agency.
