== Summary ==

Vranje town song is a southern Serbian urban song tradition associated with the city’s local speech, expressive singing and shared social history. It is related to broader Balkan urban-song worlds but retains its own repertoire and identity. It should not be replaced by a generic brass-band track whenever a listener selects Vranje.<ref>[https://worldmusic.org.rs/2020/05/02/exhibition-and-guide-serbia-living-tradition-en/ World Music Association of Serbia: Serbia, Living Tradition]. Continuing interpretation includes Ivana Tasić, Čeda Marković, Danica Krstić and performers drawing on the town-song repertoire alongside recordings by Staniša Stošić and Vasilija Radojčić. Songs such as Lela Vranjanka, Dimitrijo, sine Mitre, Stojanke, bela Vranjanke and Otvori mi belo Lenče offer recognisable points of comparison. Recent remembrance of Lela Vranjanka shows the continuing life of an older work, not a newly composed hit.<ref>[https://www.rts.rs/lat/magazin/muzika/5762315/lela-vranjanka-vranje-stanisa-stosic-jelena-pesma.html RTS: Lela Vranjanka and continuing remembrance, 2026]. == History ==

The town-song form developed within Vranje’s nineteenth-century urban culture, with Serbian, Roma and Aromanian contributions and traces of Ottoman cultural contact. Later recordings, broadcasting and concert interpretation brought local song to wider audiences. The interwoven history is important: the repertoire cannot be explained as the isolated possession of one population.<ref>[https://worldmusic.org.rs/2020/05/02/exhibition-and-guide-serbia-living-tradition-en/ World Music Association of Serbia: Serbia, Living Tradition]. == Musical characteristics ==

Expressive melodic turns, phrased delivery and local-language character are central to the song tradition. Arrangements range across smaller ensembles, folk orchestras and newer interpretations. Some recorded sequences join two songs; these are retained as one performance item rather than inflated into several tracks. Different interpreters of a named song can be musically worthwhile, while repeated uploads of the same master are excluded.

== Geography and communities ==

Vranje and its nearby southern communities form the core. Niš and Belgrade add more modest adopted and migrant reception, without turning every Serbian location into an equally strong Vranje-song landscape. The local region also contains contemporary pop, rap, pop-folk and Roma repertoire. The inherited town song complements that present listening.

== Artists ==

Staniša Stošić, Vasilija Radojčić, Čeda Marković and Ivana Tasić are important recorded interpreters. Sofka Nikolić and other archival voices add historical perspectives where the particular work fits this repertoire. The collection distinguishes Vranje songs from unrelated songs that merely appear in the same broadcaster’s catalogue.
