== Summary ==
Tuvan khoomei is a family of overtone-singing practices associated with Tuva and Tuvan communities in neighboring regions. A singer emphasizes harmonics over a sustained lower sound, creating an audible melodic layer within the voice. The category includes several named approaches whose timbres differ markedly. It is part of a wider musical world of songs, instruments, pastoral relationships and sound imitation, not the whole of Tuvan music. Its striking acoustics are an entrance into that world; melodic judgment and a performer's relationship to place make the practice more than a vocal demonstration. <ref name="ge-tuva">[https://folkways.si.edu/tuva-among-the-spirits-sound-music-and-nature-in-sakha/world/album/smithsonian Tuva, Among the Spirits, Smithsonian Folkways].</ref>

== Contemporary and trending ==
Local teaching, cultural institutions, festivals, touring ensembles and international learners all participate in contemporary khoomei. Professional concert groups have made the sound familiar far beyond Tuva, while individual and community transmission continues at home. Women performers have also expanded a public field historically associated primarily with men. Electric-band and experimental approaches offer further artistic possibilities. These developments should be heard as specific choices rather than a single path toward modernization. A solo demonstration, a local song and a carefully arranged touring set can each reveal something that the other formats leave less visible. <ref name="further-1">[https://folkways.si.edu/throat-singing-unique-vocalization-three-cultures/world/music/article/smithsonian Throat Singing: A Unique Vocalization from Three Cultures — Smithsonian Folkways].</ref>

== History ==
The tradition draws on pastoral and regional sound practices, including relationships with animals, landscapes and ideas about the surrounding world. Soviet cultural institutions reshaped public performance and professional ensembles; later independent groups developed their own international careers. Recording and ethnomusicological collaboration helped document styles, repertories and individual voices. The history is therefore not simply one of an isolated ancient technique suddenly discovered by outsiders. Tuvan musicians have actively organized, arranged and reinterpreted their music, negotiating between local knowledge, formal institutions and the expectations of new audiences. <ref name="further-1" />

== Musical characteristics ==
Khoomei can name both the wider practice and one particular style. Sygyt commonly emphasizes a high, whistle-like overtone, while kargyraa produces a much lower, resonant sound; other approaches manipulate rolling or pulsing textures. Performers may move between techniques and ordinary singing. Instruments such as igil fiddle, doshpuluur lute and xomus jaw harp can participate in related repertories. Listen for a recognizable melody carried by the highlighted harmonics and for the relation between vocal color and instrumental texture. The effect is musically organized, not simply an exercise in producing the largest number of simultaneous pitches.

== Geography and communities ==
Tuva's connected rural and urban communities form the primary heartland, with Kyzyl an institutional center rather than the sole source of practice. Tuvan communities in western Mongolia and neighboring borderlands form meaningful related worlds. One broad Tuvan field therefore comes first, with a smaller western Mongolian extension that does not imply equal affinity throughout the entire surrounding steppe. International concert audiences and learners are dispersed, so they are described in the article rather than converted into a large continuous global field. This retains the scale of durable cultural transmission while recognizing genuine outward reach.

== Artists ==
Huun-Huur-Tu offers a widely documented ensemble route, with Kaigal-ool Khovalyg among its influential singers and instrumentalists. Alash and Chirgilchin provide other approaches to ensemble presentation, while Yat-Kha and Sainkho Namtchylak demonstrate different experimental relationships with Tuvan vocal resources. Tyva Kyzy is a useful reference for women's participation. These names should open comparison rather than form a ranking. A documented solo, an accompanied song and a band arrangement help separate technique, repertoire and production. Older archive recordings also reveal individual musicians whose voices may not resemble a modern touring ensemble's blended sound.

== Related genres ==
Tuvan khoomei is related to Mongolian overtone-singing traditions but should retain its language, stylistic terminology and regional history. Tuvan long song and refrain songs represent additional vocal practices rather than merely ordinary passages between throat-singing displays. Overtone techniques in other parts of the world have distinct meanings and should not be assigned a single origin by sound alone. Contemporary improvisers may borrow a technique while working outside inherited repertoire. Those relationships are most intelligible when the underlying Tuvan song world remains audible and named, instead of being replaced by an undifferentiated label of throat singing.

Tuva is a connected regional heartland encompassing rural communities and Kyzyl, with meaningful Tuvan transmission in western Mongolia. Represent that continuity and the separate borderland extension; global touring and individual learners do not warrant equally strong fields across their entire destination countries.

These fields are editorial illustrations of musical affinity and cultural reach, not listener statistics. Radius marks the zero edge of the fade; overlapping fields of this genre combine by maximum.
