== Summary ==
Turkmen dutar and bagshy describe a connected instrumental and vocal world in which the long-necked, two-stringed lute plays a central role. Solo dutar music and song accompaniment are distinct resources, while epic bagshy practice can combine sung poetry, prose narration and improvisation. The instrument's compact appearance conceals a highly developed range of articulation and musical knowledge. Cultural identity rests in repertories, performers, makers and social occasions together. The category concerns Turkmen practice rather than every tradition across Asia that uses an instrument called dutar. <ref name="unesco-turkmen-dutar">[https://ich.unesco.org/en/RL/dutar-making-craftsmanship-and-traditional-music-performing-art-combined-with-singing-01565 Dutar making craftsmanship and traditional music performing art combined with singing — UNESCO].</ref>

== Contemporary and trending ==
The music continues through masters, apprentices, families, music education, cultural groups, celebrations and recordings. Community documentation from Dashoguz includes a women's bagshy group explicitly engaged in transmitting skills to new generations. That evidence broadens an account that might otherwise center only famous male epic performers. Formal institutions and informal learning provide different routes into the same connected world. Instrument makers also contribute to continuity by sustaining the material and acoustic resources of performance. A surviving repertory cannot sound without both playable instruments and people who know how to use them. <ref name="turkmen-women-bagshy">[https://ich.unesco.org/doc/src/46298.pdf Women bagshys of Dashoguz: community consent — UNESCO].</ref>

== History ==
The tradition developed through regional communities, poet-singers and social gatherings within the wider Turkmen world. Epic cycles, lyrical texts and instrumental pieces supplied different forms of remembered material. Twentieth-century recording, education and public ensembles changed their circulation, preserving particular interpretations while introducing new presentation settings. The Köroğlu recording collection distinguishes singers of selected epic-related songs from tellers of extended narratives, an essential reminder that an album's short tracks may represent only part of a much larger practice. Historical continuity includes those distinctions as well as the music's shared public symbolism. <ref name="turkmen-koroglu">[https://folkways.si.edu/turkmen-epic-singing-koroglu/world/music/album/smithsonian Turkmen Epic Singing: Köroğlu — Smithsonian Folkways/UNESCO Collection].</ref>

== Musical characteristics ==
Listen to the relationship between vocal phrasing and the dutar's rhythmic and melodic articulation. A solo instrumental piece directs attention differently from a song, and an epic sequence creates another pattern of expectation through shifts between speech and singing. Gyjak can add a bowed line in some ensembles. Local styles vary in attack, vocal production and repertory. A musician's control of timing and texture can make two strings seem much more expansive than their number suggests. Comparing several regional performers reveals why the field is a family of approaches rather than one standardized national sound.

== Geography and communities ==
The principal landscape spans Turkmenistan's connected regional communities, including rural networks, oasis towns and urban publics. Southwestern/central and northern/eastern fields preserve cultural continuity across its scale without locating the music only in Ashgabat. Turkmen communities in northeastern Iran and northern Afghanistan provide related cross-border continuations, with their own local conditions and repertories. The inventory documentation explicitly recognizes practice where Turkmen communities have historically lived. These fields represent shared musical familiarity and transmission, not a claim that all populations within a circular area have one identity or identical musical preference. <ref name="turkmen-inventory">[https://ich.unesco.org/doc/src/46297.pdf?t=1574432263 Turkmen dutar national inventory documentation — UNESCO].</ref>

== Artists ==
Mylly Tachmyradov and Shukur Bagshy provide historical entry references within the wider Turkmen instrumental and singer tradition. The Smithsonian collection credits practitioners including Tädzhilbai Gurbanov, Akmämmet Rakhamanov and their accompanists, allowing listeners to move from a generic label to actual recorded interpretations. Women's community groups and present teachers add further routes. A useful comparison follows a lyrical song, a solo dutar piece and an epic-related item, asking how instrument and voice divide expressive work. Less internationally visible makers and accompanists are part of the artistry, not merely its support infrastructure.

== Related genres ==
Uzbek bakhshi and Iranian Khorasani bakhshi share regional histories and related terminology while maintaining distinct musical worlds. Dutar traditions in neighboring communities likewise require their own accounts. The Gorogly/Köroğlu narrative connects Turkmen practice to wider epic circulation without making every version interchangeable. Hearing these relationships helps a newcomer recognize both connection and specificity. The tradition's depth lies in the way an instrument, voice and remembered words can carry social memory across different scales, from an intimate gathering to a widely shared cultural emblem.
