== Summary ==

Tlingit song connects clan and community repertoires, social dancing and present-day musical creativity across Southeast Alaska and neighboring Canada. Songs can carry specific ownership, histories and responsibilities.

== Contemporary and trending ==

Sealaska Heritage’s Celebration brings Tlingit groups together with Haida and Tsimshian groups while identifying their separate communities. Local groups and contemporary performers continue teaching, composing and performing; public availability does not remove clan rights.<ref>[https://sealaskaheritage.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/05/2026-Celebration-Program.pdf Sealaska Heritage: Celebration 2026 programme].</ref>

== History ==

Clan histories and oral transmission underpin many songs. Colonial suppression and later cultural revitalization shape the archive and current performance setting. Celebration recordings from different years document particular performances rather than a single timeless repertoire.<ref>[https://sealaskaheritage.org/shi-celebration-photo-and-recording-policies/ Sealaska Heritage: Celebration photo and recording policies].</ref><ref>[https://www.uaf.edu/anla/collections/map/ Indigenous Peoples and Languages of Alaska: GIS data and historical scope].</ref>

== Musical characteristics ==

Singing, repeated phrases, drums and coordinated dance are common in the public selections. Contemporary arrangements vary. Work titles, group identities and source context are retained, and no inference of unrestricted reuse follows from an embed.

== Geography and communities ==

Southeast communities including Yakutat, Haines/Klukwan, Juneau and Sitka form a connected Alaska landscape, with inland Canadian relationships. Haida communities around Hydaburg and Tsimshian Metlakatla receive separate emphasis, with overlap where gatherings bring groups together.
