== Summary ==

Barlovento’s tambor traditions connect Afro-Venezuelan drumming, singing, dance and community devotion in eastern Miranda. This regional gateway keeps the mina–curbata and culo e puya ensembles distinct instead of treating all Venezuelan drumming as one sound. <ref name="southamerica2026-ve-san-juan">[https://fundacionbigott.org/celebracion-a-san-juan-bautista/ Fundación Bigott, Celebración a San Juan Bautista, 2020]. == Contemporary and trending ==

The broader Saint John the Baptist festive cycle entered UNESCO’s Representative List in 2021. Bigott’s September 2026 programme offers Afro-Venezuelan percussion and traditional-voice teaching in Petare, evidence of a wider transmission network rather than proof that every class teaches the same Barlovento repertoire. <ref name="southamerica2026-ve-san-juan-unesco">[https://ich.unesco.org/es/RL/ciclo-festivo-alrededor-de-la-veneracion-y-culto-de-san-juan-bautista-01682 UNESCO, Saint John the Baptist festive cycle, 2021]. == History ==

The Saint John cycle grew within Afro-Venezuelan communities under colonial slavery, bringing devotion together with music, movement and oral knowledge. Recognition concerns that whole cultural cycle, not just a percussion genre. <ref name="southamerica2026-ve-san-juan-unesco">[https://ich.unesco.org/es/RL/ciclo-festivo-alrededor-de-la-veneracion-y-culto-de-san-juan-bautista-01682 UNESCO, Saint John the Baptist festive cycle, 2021]. == Musical characteristics ==

Mina and curbata have different ensemble roles. Culo e puya uses three long drums in an interacting set, with voices and dancers forming a social performance space. The festive repertoire also includes unaccompanied sirenas, fulías and processional music; these should not all be relabelled drum dances. <ref name="southamerica2026-ve-san-juan">[https://fundacionbigott.org/celebracion-a-san-juan-bautista/ Fundación Bigott, Celebración a San Juan Bautista, 2020]. == Geography and communities ==

A connected Barlovento field follows Curiepe, Higuerote, Río Chico and nearby communities, with a weaker Caracas–Guarenas–Guatire transmission connection. Its relatively compact core prevents an undifferentiated coast-wide tambor label.

== Artists ==

Community drummers, singers and dancers carry the practice. Willy Mayo supplies the selected Curiepe-associated recording through his own public channel; other participating performers are not individually identified in its metadata.

[[Joropo tuyero]] belongs to another Miranda musical network; [[Calipso de El Callao]] has its own Antillean-connected history. San Juan practices in Aragua, Carabobo and elsewhere retain local ensembles and names. The regional scope here is deliberately narrower than all Afro-Venezuelan music.

A few broad connected regional fields with gradual falloff; home practice is stronger than documented wider circulation.

The fields express editorial judgments about relative musical affinity and reach, not measured audience shares. Radius is the zero edge of a linear fade; same-genre overlaps combine by maximum.
