== Summary ==

St. Lawrence Island Yupik song represents the distinct Siberian Yupik communities of Gambell and Savoonga, with mainland community connections. It must not be merged indiscriminately with Central Alaskan Yup’ik or Iñupiaq repertoire.

== Contemporary and trending ==

Community dancing, teaching and gatherings continue alongside newer and sacred compositions. First-person accounts from Gambell describe the relationships and remembered occasions carried by songs. Publicly identified performances form the basis of this listening collection.<ref>[https://alaskapublic.org/news/health/2026-02-02/a-look-at-siberian-yupik-dance-long-ago-through-a-teachers-stories Alaska Public Media: Siberian Yupik dance through a teacher’s stories, 2026].</ref>

== History ==

The island’s histories connect Alaska and Chukotka across the Bering Sea. Archival recordings offer historical evidence but do not establish current popularity or authorize treating all songs of neighboring peoples as interchangeable.<ref>[https://knom.org/about-knom/ KNOM: Native music and western Alaska communities].</ref><ref>[https://www.uaf.edu/anla/collections/map/ Indigenous Peoples and Languages of Alaska: GIS data and historical scope].</ref>

== Musical characteristics ==

Group singing, drumming and dance recur in the collection. Individual numbers, regional variants and named composers remain distinct; an island-composed hymn is identified as sacred song rather than silently relabeled dance music.

== Geography and communities ==

Gambell and Savoonga form a compact island core. Nome has a documented St. Lawrence Island community and dance connection. Anchorage performances are secondary gathering and diaspora connections, not an island-sized mainland homeland.

== Artists ==

Savoonga and Gambell dancers; Nome St. Lawrence Island dancers; named community singers and composers where recordings identify them.
