== Summary ==

Shertpe kuy is a family of Kazakh dombra traditions associated especially with central, eastern and southeastern schools. Its distinct phrasing and plucked articulation justify a listening route separate from western tökpe, while regional differences within shertpe remain significant.<ref>[https://musc102.blogs.wesleyan.edu/files/2020/01/Levin-et-al.-2010_The-Music-of-Central-Asia_Chapter-14.pdf The Music of Central Asia, chapter 14: Kazakh instrumental traditions].</ref>

== Contemporary and trending ==

Teaching, community performance and concert interpretation keep this repertoire active. Archival and recent performances are retained with their distinct versions; older music is not excluded simply because of age. <ref>[https://digital.soas.ac.uk/content/IS/00/00/00/31/00002/IS00000031_00002.pdf Kazakh Music: regional anthology notes, SOAS collection].</ref>

== History ==

Tattimbet is a central figure in the Arqa school. Bayzhigit’s eastern repertoire and the Qaratau traditions associated with Sugir and Tolegen Mombekov show why shertpe is not one narrowly bounded local style.<ref>[https://musc102.blogs.wesleyan.edu/files/2020/01/Levin-et-al.-2010_The-Music-of-Central-Asia_Chapter-14.pdf The Music of Central Asia, chapter 14: Kazakh instrumental traditions].</ref>

== Musical characteristics ==

Individually articulated notes, subtle rhythmic shaping and reflective or narrative melodic development are characteristic. These are tendencies rather than a rule that every piece is slow or quiet. Qaratau includes exchanges with other instrumental practices; the specific composition and arrangement must be identified.

== Geography and communities ==

Arqa around Karaganda and Karkaraly, the eastern Altai–Tarbagatai landscape, Zhetysu and Qaratau form connected but differentiated centers. Broad regional fields preserve those landscapes, with moderate metropolitan adoption through teaching and concerts.<ref>[https://ich.unesco.org/en/RL/traditional-art-of-dombra-kuy-in-kazakhstan-00996 UNESCO: Kazakh traditional art of Dombra Kuy].</ref>

== Artists ==

Tattimbet, Sugir, Tolegen Mombekov and Bayzhigit are represented through named works. Bilal Iskakov, Zhangali Zhuzbay, Magauiya Khamzin and Talasbek Asemkulov illustrate different performing lineages; several clearly distinct interpretations are retained where useful.
