== Summary ==

Serbian folk song and kolo is a broad listening route through vocal traditions and instrumental social-dance music. Kolo names a linked collective dance and a family of associated musical practices, not one tune. The entry brings related song, accordion, frula and ensemble performances together while retaining more specific routes for Vranje song, tamburica, Roma music and brass bands.<ref>[https://ich.unesco.org/en/RL/kolo-traditional-folk-dance-01270 UNESCO: Kolo, traditional folk dance]. == Contemporary and trending ==

Living practice includes community singing, weddings, cultural societies, broadcasting and concert reinterpretation. Bilja Krstić and Bistrik, instrumentalists such as Bora Dugić and the RTS folk orchestras present different ways of sustaining and rearranging repertoire. Archival Cune recordings remain useful alongside newer performances. Neither a modern upload nor a new orchestration changes an older song’s original age.

== History ==

Rural vocal practice, social dance, migration and urban entertainment have continually interacted. Broadcasting and professional ensembles amplified some local forms while preserving particular named performers. The traditional field is therefore not a sealed pre-modern layer: inherited song survives through changing institutions, family use and new arrangements.<ref>[https://worldmusic.org.rs/2020/05/02/exhibition-and-guide-serbia-living-tradition-en/ World Music Association of Serbia: Serbia, Living Tradition]. == Musical characteristics ==

Kolo performances often foreground a strong repeating dance pulse and instrumental ornament; songs may use more flexible melodic phrasing. Accordion and frula provide contrasting lead colours. Western singing iz vika supplies another vocal texture, represented by complete musical items rather than news reports about heritage. A single umbrella does not mean these practices sound identical.

== Geography and communities ==

Central and western Serbia form a substantial connected landscape, with southern song traditions and northern adoption overlapping. Towns, villages and migrant networks all participate. The map deliberately allows contemporary pop-folk, rap, pop and rock in these same places: countryside is a place of present listening as well as inherited repertoire.

== Artists ==

Bilja Krstić, Bistrik, Ljubiša Pavković, Bora Dugić and Predrag Gojković Cune supply several interpretive and instrumental approaches. Community and archival performances retain their credited singers where supplied. Publisher or recordist names are not silently substituted for an uncredited performer.
