== Summary ==
The Ozarks is a recognized upland region centered on southern Missouri and northern Arkansas, with smaller reaches into northeastern Oklahoma and southeastern Kansas. Country, rock, pop and contemporary Black popular music belong to its broad listening world; distinctive affinities include fiddling, ballads, community music parties and gospel. Historian Brooks Blevins describes a changing society with substantial contrasts between the metropolitan Springfield Plain and its more sparsely settled uplands.<ref name="oz-geography">[https://collections.si.edu/search/detail/edanmdm:posts_34422af30cbd4e5c8fb55540fc135cc3 An Introduction to the Ozarks: It's Not What You Might Expect], Brooks Blevins, Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage, April 2023; full essay, regional extent and internal urban/rural geography.</ref>

Old-time music remains a way of listening and socializing within particular communities. Folklorist Julie Henigan's 2023 account follows music parties around Springfield, Mansfield, Ozark and McClurg, Missouri. Regular participants include listeners and card players alongside musicians; younger players have also joined an aging musical community. The gathering itself is part of the music's meaning, bringing friends and neighbors together repeatedly.<ref name="oz-parties">[https://collections.si.edu/search/detail/edanmdm:posts_2f69cff48f0e83ab99343f70162868b5 Music Parties in the Missouri Ozarks: Continuity and Change in a Traditional Community], Julie Henigan, Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage, June 23, 2023; full ethnographic essay, with earlier observations and a contemporary update.</ref>

A fair introduction also includes contemporary country, rock and pop. Northwest Arkansas and southwest Missouri contain large, diverse metropolitan communities; their musical account must leave room for immigrant and Indigenous repertoires rather than treating every resident as a participant in Anglo-American string-band music. Blevins documents the demographic contrast; it does not provide a genre-preference census.<ref name="oz-geography" />

== History ==
The region's musical traditions developed through Indigenous presence, settlement from the upland South, African American contributions, commercial entertainment and repeated migration. Collectors emphasized ballads and rural string music, leaving other practices less fully recorded. The Encyclopedia of Arkansas describes a continuing folk revival whose musicians also absorbed blues, country and rock.<ref name="oz-folk">[https://encyclopediaofarkansas.net/entries/folk-music-5003/ Folk Music], Encyclopedia of Arkansas; substantive regional historical account and discussion of continuing practice, accessed October 18, 2026.</ref>

== Genres ==
Fiddle tunes, ballads, old-time string bands, bluegrass, country and gospel form the best-documented regional cluster. They share much with Appalachia without making the Ozarks its western appendage. Smithsonian Folkways' regional listening guide also illustrates western swing, blues and jazz and explains how commercial country recordings and jukeboxes interacted with community music.<ref name="oz-guide">[https://folkways.si.edu/playlist/a-field-guide-to-the-ozarks A Field Guide to the Ozarks], Smithsonian Folkways, 2023; substantive curated commentary using mainly historic recordings, useful for repertoire and collecting history rather than contemporary market shares.</ref>

== Artists ==
Almeda Riddle, Ollie Gilbert and Jimmy Driftwood offer entry points into the recorded ballad and folk repertoire. Art Galbraith and Bob Holt represent different parts of the fiddle tradition; David Scrivner, Emily Garoutte and Hawken Boldman appear in Henigan's account of changing community life.<ref name="oz-parties" /> Familiar commercial recordings and newer regional musicians widen this listening journey beyond the archival gateways.

== Boundary definition and research ==
MuGlobe follows the Ozark uplift's recognized broad geography. Blevins describes the Missouri River to the north, the Mississippi and Black rivers to the east, the Arkansas River to the south and the Grand/Neosho River toward the west, with a gradual western transition into the Plains. The Boston Mountains, St. Francois Mountains, Springfield Plain and Salem Plateau provide geographic anchors.<ref name="oz-geography" /> These descriptions support the cultural starting area; exact vertices remain MuGlobe's cartographic interpretation.

The footprint should include the Springfield and northwest Arkansas urban corridors rather than exclude them to manufacture a uniformly rural region. Their greater demographic variety belongs in the article and, where researched, in metropolitan overlaps. It should not expand over all Missouri or Arkansas. The Arkansas Delta is a different lowland environment, while the Ouachitas are a neighboring upland system rather than an automatic Ozark component. Geographic similarities and shared musical inheritance with Appalachia are acknowledged, but a two-part Appalachia–Ozarks union would conceal two independently documented cultural regions.
