== Summary ==
The Gullah Geechee Lowcountry is a coastal cultural landscape whose distinctive musical affinities connect African American sacred singing, ring shout, communal memory and contemporary reinterpretation. The wider everyday mixture includes gospel, R&B, hip-hop, pop and other southern popular music. Its strongest documented communities include the Sea Islands and adjacent mainland of South Carolina and Georgia, within a corridor extending into North Carolina and Florida.<ref name="gg-corridor">[https://home.nps.gov/places/gullah-geechee-cultural-heritage-corridor.htm Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor], National Park Service; official cultural-geographic description, accessed October 18, 2026.</ref>

Sacred songs remain a living practice in praise houses, churches, community gatherings and public performances. Reporting from St. Helena Island in 2025 describes older singers maintaining the repertoire, its generational challenges and adaptations for new audiences.<ref name="gg-current">[https://apnews.com/article/6c7288390adbafa52612bbbd8f0276b6 Gullah Geechee elders work to preserve sacred songs passed down by enslaved ancestors], Associated Press, August 6, 2025; on-site reporting and interviews with singers and scholar Eric Crawford on St. Helena Island.</ref> The sacred repertoire connects community memory with the wider popular music of the contemporary coast.

== History ==
Enslaved Africans and their descendants developed distinctive linguistic, religious and artistic practices in the coastal plantation landscape. Music accompanied religious worship, work, childhood and mourning. The corridor's management plan describes the historical formation of these communities and the varied social uses of their songs, including praise-house practice.<ref name="gg-study">[https://planning.nps.gov/showFile.cfm?projectID=24119&sfid=138164 Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor Management Plan, Chapter 2], National Park Service and Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor Commission, 2012; historical overview and substantive music section, pages 59–61 of printed chapter numbering.</ref>

== Genres ==
Spirituals, ring shout, gospel and community song are central to the region's distinctive musical account. In ring shout, call-and-response singing joins counterclockwise movement, clapping and footwork. Praise-house and other sacred practices make listening a shared activity rather than simply an encounter with a recording. The management plan describes variation across communities, including rural and urban settings.<ref name="gg-study" /> Contemporary performers also carry this repertoire into concert settings and new arrangements.

== Artists ==
The McIntosh County Shouters and Georgia Sea Island singers offer gateways into ring shout and coastal song. Voices of Gullah, Minnie Gracie Gadson and Marlena Smalls appear in the recent account of continuing sacred music.<ref name="gg-current" /> Community singers and local religious settings offer further ways into this repertoire.

== Boundary definition and research ==
The congressionally designated Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor runs from Pender County, North Carolina, to St. Johns County, Florida. Its documented scope is the first geographic reference for the wider cultural connection.<ref name="gg-corridor" /> The Lowcountry core around Charleston, Beaufort, St. Helena Island, Savannah and the Georgia Sea Islands has particularly substantial musical documentation. The corridor's inland extent and county membership are management geography, not a measured boundary of genre preference.

MuGlobe should represent this as an overlap within the coastal South, with a footprint following the named coastal corridor and its islands. It should not fill entire Carolinas, Georgia or Florida, or draw a racial boundary around every Black community. The Jacksonville area also contains documented Gullah Geechee communities, including Cosmo, where the National Park Service has recorded local musical performance.<ref name="gg-florida">[https://www.nps.gov/timu/learn/historyculture/gullah-geechee-communities.htm Gullah Geechee Communities], Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve, National Park Service; community description and documented Cosmo performance, accessed October 18, 2026.</ref>

Charleston and Savannah are urban environments with wider audiences; suburban development and mainland communities belong in the account rather than being omitted for a picturesque island-only outline. The geographic boundary is approximate, while the distinction from inland Piedmont and generic Deep South summaries rests on documented cultural and musical continuity.
