<!-- Region ID: us-alaska-yupik. -->
== Summary ==
Southwestern Alaska's Yup'ik and Cup'ik communities connect music with language, movement, humor and social memory. Wider popular songs and Christian repertoire coexist with yuraq, the song-and-dance practices that carry a particularly recognizable regional meaning. Bethel is an important gathering and media center, while village communities sustain distinct local histories and ways of performing.<ref name="yupik-loc">[https://www.loc.gov/collections/songs-of-america/articles-and-essays/musical-styles/american-indian-and-native-alaskan/yupik/ Yup'ik Song], Library of Congress, American Folklife Center. New music is part of this regional life. KYUK's interview with Byron Nicolai discusses his Yup'ik-language album ''Ayagnera'', while its Modern Tradition reporting follows Martin Paul using music and social media to connect people across rural Alaska.<ref name="yupik-nicolai">[https://www.kyuk.org/podcast/coffee-at-kyuk/2022-05-05/yupik-music-in-rolling-stone Yup'ik music in Rolling Stone], Coffee at KYUK, 5 May 2022. Cama'i and village dance gatherings also keep a participatory repertoire active across generations.

== History ==
Song and dance have long conveyed stories and relationships. Suppression under colonial and missionary systems interrupted practices in some communities; later generations rebuilt public gatherings and teaching. Ethnomusicologist Maria Shaa Tláa Williams places Bethel's Cama'i festival within a wider Native musical renaissance, without treating the varied peoples of Alaska as one culture.<ref name="yupik-williams">[https://www.uaf.edu/music/cms/modern-alaska-native-dance-festivals.php Modern Alaska Native Dance Festivals], Maria Shaa Tláa Williams, University of Alaska Fairbanks, 28 October 2024. == Genres ==
Yuraq drumsong and dance, contemporary Yup'ik-language songs, gospel and other Christian music connect with familiar popular recordings. Distinctive local practices help explain the region even when a household also listens to the same national hits heard elsewhere.

== Artists ==
Byron Nicolai, Martin Paul and Pamyua offer different contemporary listening paths. Chuna McIntyre and the Nunamta dancers introduce publicly documented song-and-dance traditions. Their different approaches convey a living regional world rather than a single prescribed Native sound.

== Boundary definition and research ==
The core includes the Yukon–Kuskokwim delta and related southwest Alaska Yup'ik/Cup'ik communities, extending toward Bristol Bay. Bethel's town and nearby villages have a more concentrated media connection; remote communities rely on other local and shared channels. KYUK explicitly describes its regional services and village repeaters, evidence of communication relationships rather than a cultural boundary derived from signal reach.<ref name="yupik-kyuk">[https://www.kyuk.org/history-and-mission History and Mission], KYUK, current station account. Primary statement of Bethel/village service, language programming and music channels.</ref>

UAF's Yup'ik traditional-territory feature is a geographic starting proxy. It does not claim every present resident shares one preference, and local Cup'ik/Cup'ig distinctions remain. St. Lawrence Island/Siberian Yupik and Iñupiat regions stay separately discoverable. Anchorage and Fairbanks connections are overlapping modern networks rather than grounds for moving the homeland or erasing the region.

'''Working map outline, October 18, 2026.''' UAF licensed GIS starting territories (Yup'ik), approximately 1900 with 2013 GIS update, combined with separately researched living musical relationships. Modern shared repertoire, urban/rural variation and diaspora are described independently; historical language outlines are not present audience or exclusive cultural boundaries. Cross-border source components are retained. The stored outline includes a 0.02-degree atlas-edge allowance and 0.001-degree topology-preserving simplification.<ref name="muglobe-working-geography">[https://www.uaf.edu/anla/collections/map/ Indigenous Peoples and Languages of Alaska — GIS data].
