== Summary ==
Western New Guinea has interlocking musical worlds rather than one uniform Papuan sound. Biak's wor singing and church choirs, the string-led dance music yospan, Wamena's electronic wisisi, Jayapura's rap communities and nationally circulating pop connect different places and generations. The broad region covers the Indonesian-administered western part of New Guinea and nearby islands; Papua New Guinea has separate articles.<ref name="biak">[https://folkways-media.si.edu/docs/folkways/artwork/SFW40426.pdf Philip Yampolsky, Music of Biak: Wor, Church Songs, Yospan (1996; corrections and supplement 2008)], Smithsonian Folkways.</ref><ref name="wisisi">[https://yesnowave.bandcamp.com/album/etai-wisisi-waga-o-wamena-hanorasuok Asep Nayak, Etai Wisisi Waga O Wamena Hanorasuok (5 February 2023), with Raka Ibrahim interviews], Yes No Wave Music.</ref><ref name="rap">[https://ejournal.uncen.ac.id/index.php/JAP/article/download/1381/1094 Muhammad Anas, Simon Abdi K. Papuan musicians also maintain important networks beyond this outline. The Black Brothers and their descendants connect the region to other Melanesian countries, the Netherlands and Australia. These connections make migration, exile, language and political identity part of the musical history without reducing every musician's work to the same message.<ref name="black">[https://kultur.media/interview/black-brothers/ Black Brothers — interview with Amri and Yochie], kultur.media.</ref><ref name="sistaz">[https://www.abc.net.au/pacific/programs/sistas-lets-talk/how-the-black-sistaz-use-music-as-activism-/14112716 How the Black Sistaz use music as activism (7 December 2022)], ABC Pacific / Hilda Wayne.</ref>

Papua Reggae Festival opened in Nabire on 16 October 2026. Reporting on the opening described a platform for local bands, creative activity and cultural expression; the governor presented it as a space for peace and cooperation. This establishes a contemporary public event, not a measurement of reggae's share of listening across every Papuan community.<ref name="festival">[https://papuatengah.antaranews.com/berita/90597/gubernur-ajak-pemuda-papua-tengah-rawat-perdamaian-dengan-musik-reggae Gubernur ajak pemuda Papua Tengah rawat perdamaian dengan musik reggae (16 October 2026)], ANTARA Papua Tengah / Ali Nur Ichsan.</ref>

Electronic wisisi continues through self-published recordings as well as international cultural networks. Ulagay Onelleck Marllex's February 2026 release ''Lanny wisisi papua pegunungan'' explicitly describes its combination of Papuan traditional song and FL Studio production. A November 2025 university-organized screening and discussion in Taipei featured Asep Nayak and Wok The Rock, connecting the music to discussion of the documentary ''Wisisi Nit Meke''.<ref name="lanny">[https://ulagayonelleckmarllex.bandcamp.com/track/lanny-wisisi-papua-pegunungan Ulagay Onelleck Marllex, Lanny wisisi papua pegunungan (16 February 2026)], Ulagay Onelleck Marllex.</ref><ref name="taipei">[https://iccs.chss.nycu.edu.tw/en/activity.php?USN=1640 Documentary Screenings and Discussion on Papuan Music (11 November 2025)], National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University, International Center for Cultural Studies.</ref>

Nowela Mikhelia's 2026 single ''Mamae'' offers another route into the present. In her account of its creation, memories of childhood landscapes and affection for Papua underpin a song written with Kaleb J and Belanegara Abe. Its place attachment is expressed through contemporary popular songwriting.<ref name="mamae">[https://www.antaranews.com/berita/5435906/nowela-mikhelia-rilis-mamae-sebagai-wujud-cintanya-pada-papua Nowela Mikhelia rilis Mamae sebagai wujud cintanya pada Papua (24 February 2026)], ANTARA / Abdu Faisal.</ref>

== History ==
Mambesak formed at Cenderawasih University in 1978. Arnold Ap and his collaborators brought songs in different local languages into cassette recordings, radio programmes and public performances associated with the university museum. Recollections published by Jubi emphasize careful pronunciation and differences between communities' drumming practices, rather than treating regional culture as interchangeable. Ap and fellow musician Edu Mofu died violently in 1984 after being detained; their continuing commemoration is inseparable from the group's reception.<ref name="mambesak">[https://jubi.id/pacnews/2026/42-years-after-his-death-arnold-clemens-aps-legacy-endures-in-west-papua/ Dominggus Mampioper, 42 Years After His Death, Arnold Clemens Ap’s Legacy Endures (28 April 2026)], Jubi / Pacific Islands News Association.</ref>

The Black Brothers followed a different path through amplified popular music and international circulation. In a retrospective interview, Amri and Yochie recalled Jakarta performances mixing rock, funk and reggae, learning songs from radio recordings, and later travel through Papua New Guinea and Europe. Their accounts give a musician's perspective on adaptation and mobility; claims to have introduced a genre everywhere in the Pacific should not be accepted as an exclusive origin story.<ref name="black" />

More recent research by Muhammad Anas, Simon Abdi K. Frank and Usman Idris examines Jayapura rap as an urban community practice. It describes collaboration, social-media circulation and efforts to challenge stigma surrounding rappers, making the scene visible beyond a list of celebrity names.<ref name="rap" />

Philip Yampolsky's Biak recordings distinguish wor, church songs and yospan. Wor includes choral repertories associated with celebrations; the collection also documents women's church choirs and string-based music for social dancing. The recording's geographical specificity matters: it cannot stand for all highland, southern or coastal traditions.<ref name="biak" />

Electronic wisisi has a different history. In the label's interviews, Nikolas Surabut describes using music software from 2009 to create recordings connected to highland dance practice. Asep Nayak subsequently developed his own productions. Phones, USB storage and informal copying helped tracks move between gatherings; this circulation did not initially depend on conventional album releases or ticketed clubs.<ref name="wisisi" />

Rap supplies narrative and social commentary, while reggae supports bands, festivals and cross-Pacific connections. Pop collaborations also join these scenes: Nowela's ''Runnin'', released in 2022 with Epo D'Fenomeno, was developed across the distance between Papua and Jakarta. Such collaborations are part of regional musical life even when production is distributed between cities.<ref name="rap" /><ref name="festival" /><ref name="runnin" />

Mambesak and the Black Brothers provide complementary historical starting points. For documented Biak repertories, Yampolsky's ''Music of Indonesia, Volume 10: Music of Biak, Irian Jaya'' identifies individual participating ensembles and communities. Its historical title uses an earlier administrative name; the recordings should be approached with their original notes and later corrections.<ref name="mambesak" /><ref name="black" /><ref name="biak" />

Asep Nayak's ''Etai Wisisi Waga O Wamena Hanorasuok'', released by Yes No Wave Music in 2023, offers an authored electronic entry point. Its credits identify work in Jayapura, Denpasar and Berlin, illustrating how a locally rooted practice acquires wider production networks.<ref name="wisisi" />

Epo D'Fenomeno is a significant Jayapura rapper and collaborator. In a January 2026 interview he emphasized sustained creative work and multiple possible careers for young Papuans. Nowela's songs offer a related but distinct popular vocal route. In diaspora, the Black Sistaz carry forward their family's musical and activist history, while Voice of Lele's 2026 university interview discusses singing in Biak, Tok Pisin and Bislama.<ref name="epo">[https://papua.antaranews.com/berita/758998/pegiat-seni-papua-ajak-anak-muda-konsistensi-dalam-karya Pegiat seni Papua ajak anak muda konsistensi dalam karya (29 January 2026)], ANTARA Papua.</ref><ref name="mamae" /><ref name="sistaz" /><ref name="lele">[https://rss.com/podcasts/the-secret-life-of-language/3091228/ Voice of Lele on shattering borders, preserving culture and a multilingual family life (26 August 2026)], University of Melbourne, School of Languages and Linguistics.</ref>

== Boundary definition and research ==
The outline is a broad administrative approximation, not the boundary of a single people, language or tradition. The term Western New Guinea is used geographically here. The related label West Papua can refer to a much wider cultural and political homeland than the present province of that name; neither usage justifies collapsing the island's internal differences.

Coastal evidence from Biak and Jayapura is comparatively accessible, while wisisi documentation opens a highland perspective. In a public discussion, musician and cultural worker Max Binur explicitly stressed differences between the singing and dancing of mountain, valley and coastal communities. Those distinctions deserve more locally led articles as the collection develops.<ref name="discussion">[https://arsip.jubi.id/jubi-laksanakan-peluncuran-virtual-nyanyian-nurani-tanah-papua/ Jubi laksanakan peluncuran virtual Nyanyian Nurani Tanah Papua], Jubi / public discussion with Max Binur and Epo D’Fenomeno.</ref>

The present overview is provisional, particularly for southern communities, smaller language groups and migrant audiences. Festival programmes, artist testimony, releases and ethnographic studies establish particular practices and connections; they do not supply comparable current audience statistics. The international boundary also does not stop songs, family networks or collaborations from crossing it.
