View source for Music of Western Maranhão coast and Baixada

Summary
Western Maranhão’s coast and Baixada are represented as a connected but internally varied musical region. Cururupu’s costa-de-mão, Guimarães-related zabumba and Baixada affiliations should remain distinguishable within this frame.

Contemporary and trending
Community craft and the continuing movement of groups help explain musical life beyond a single public stage. UFMA’s Cururupu documentation shows how drawings and embroidery circulate across boi organizations. <ref name="southamerica2026-ma-embroidery">UFMA Materioteca, Bordado Cururupu. == History ==
The 2019 Cururupu inventory records multiple boi sotaques and other dance practices in the same municipality. It is historical evidence of a mixed cultural landscape, not a count of active groups today. <ref name="southamerica2026-ma-cururupu-inventory">UFMA, Inventário da oferta turística de Cururupu, 2019. == Genres ==
Bumba-meu-boi de costa-de-mão, Bumba-meu-boi de zabumba and Bumba-meu-boi da Baixada retain separate musical affiliations. Tambor de crioula and Reggae maranhense connect another set of community and listening contexts. Forró and brega belong to wider popular circulation; the region is not an exclusively heritage-music zone.

Artists
Rama Santa and Guimarães-related organizations are useful gateways, alongside craftspeople and local performers who do not tour nationally. The capital’s better-recorded groups should not replace the communities from which these affiliations draw meaning. <ref name="southamerica2026-ma-cmf57">Maria Michol Pinho de Carvalho, O espetáculo do Bumba-meu-boi sem espetacularização, CMF Boletim 57, 2014. == Boundary definition and research ==
The outline joins a western coastal concentration to the connected Baixada lowlands while leaving São Luís’s island-centred selection distinct. The eastern and southern edges are transitions. This is an editorial geographical synthesis, not a claim that every named practice is equally prominent throughout.

Connected western coastal and lowland communities around Cururupu, Bacuri, Serrano, Guimarães, Pinheiro, Viana and São João Batista, extending toward the lower Pindaré. This working region contains several distinct local landscapes. Approximate overlapping musical landscape clipped to land, not an administrative boundary or audience survey. Internal differences and connections beyond the outline remain explicit.
