View source for Music of Western Cuban campesino networks

Summary
Western Cuban campesino networks connect rural-song practices, guateques, improvised poetry and family favourites around Viñales, Pinar del Río, Artemisa and Güines. They give punto and related repertoires a stronger local place within contemporary Cuban listening. Rural identity does not prescribe an exclusive musical taste.

Contemporary and trending
Punto remains a learned, practised and transmitted community art. Amaya Carricaburu Collantes's field research in Mayabeque, following work in Viñales, documents its contemporary social life. Current Cuban dance music, urban hits and popular song can share the same places and listeners; a guateque describes a particular musical gathering rather than everything heard in the surrounding countryside.

History
The décima, tonada and improvised exchange are central to the campesino inheritance. Instrumental accompaniment and poetic skill connect individual singers with collective participation. Guajira and guajira-son also travelled through commercial recordings and urban performance, so country-themed song and locally practised punto should retain their different histories.

Genres
Punto cubano, Guajira cubana, Son cubano and Bolero sit alongside Cuban salsa, Cubatón, Reparto, Cuban pop and Cuban classics. Broader Cuban favourites remain part of the mix.

Artists
Celina González and Reutilio Domínguez introduce important campesino and guajira-son repertoire. Polo Montañez offers another connection between rural identity and widely circulating popular song. Local repentistas and participating families are as important to the practice as nationally famous recording artists.

Boundary definition and research
The disconnected areas approximate western community networks rather than filling entire provinces with a rural profile. They overlap nearby towns and wider Cuban circulation. Mayabeque's own cultural listings include both campesino celebrations and alternative/electronic events, illustrating the diversity within the same province.
