== Summary ==
West Texas and the southern Plains connect high-plains towns, farming and ranching communities, the Permian Basin and western Oklahoma, with central Oklahoma's metropolitan and Cross Timbers transition. Country, familiar rock, pop, religious music and Mexican popular music share everyday listening space. Family music-making, social dancing, Western swing and regional songwriting supply recognizable affinities. This is a geographic and cultural framework with internal differences, not a boundary drawn around a country subgenre's fans.<ref name="wtx-brink">[https://plainshumanities.unl.edu/encyclopedia/doc/egp.mus.051.html West Texas Family Music Making], Pamela H. Brink, Encyclopedia of the Great Plains, University of Nebraska–Lincoln, online edition 2011. Full regional account consulted; musical families, dancing and cross-genre repertoire.</ref>

== Contemporary and trending ==
Texas country and Red Dirt form a current radio and touring connection between Texas, Oklahoma and surrounding states. The Texas Regional Radio Report documents this circuit in 2026, including William Clark Green, Cody Jinks, Wade Bowen and Shane Smith & the Saints.<ref name="wtx-trrr">[https://bulletins.billboard.com/country/country_update_2026_0605.pdf Billboard Country Update: Texas Regional Radio Report], 5 June 2026, reporting week ending 4 June. Primary specialized airplay chart; participating stations and programs, not all residents' preferences.</ref> Such music can be regionally familiar without accounting for most listening in every community.

Central Oklahoma adds a metropolitan/suburban mixture beyond the rural-Western affinity. KOSU and The Spy's 2025 review documents current local independent music connecting Oklahoma City, Norman and Stillwater with Tulsa and smaller places.<ref name="wtx-okmusic">[https://www.kosu.org/music/2025-12-26/taking-stock-of-oklahoma-music-played-on-kosu-the-spy-in-2025 Taking stock of Oklahoma music played on KOSU & The Spy in 2025], Matthew Viriyapah, 26 December 2025. Primary annual local-programming account, not a population listening survey or genre ranking.</ref> Its current hip-hop program also ranges through rap, R&B, soul and other sounds.<ref name="wtx-hiphop">[https://www.kosu.org/show/no-one-man No One Man], KOSU, program description and 2025 listening selections consulted 18 October 2026. Primary repertoire evidence; station supply does not establish audience shares.</ref> At Yukon Czech Hall, families still gather for weekly dances, with requests and instruction welcoming newcomers. The 2026 schedule confirms a living intergenerational practice beside mainstream and independent listening.<ref name="wtx-czech">[https://czechhall.com/saturday-night-dance-schedule/ Saturday Night Dance Schedule], Yukon Czech Hall, July–December 2026. Primary named-place evidence of participatory social dancing; not a claim that most central Oklahomans listen primarily to polka.</ref>

== History ==
Home music and Saturday-night dancing linked families across West Texas. Western swing, honky-tonk, rock and roll and blues became neighboring parts of a flexible repertoire. Nolan Porterfield's account emphasizes the everyday listener's encounters with radio, jukeboxes and different musical communities.<ref name="wtx-porterfield">[https://docs.gato.txst.edu/56146/Voume_2_No_2_Sandstorm-Reflections-on-the-Roots-of-West-Texas-Mucis.pdf “Sandstorm”: Reflections on the Roots of West Texas Music], Nolan Porterfield, Journal of Texas Music History 2(2), 2002. Full autobiographical scholarly essay consulted; principally mid-twentieth-century listening memories.</ref>

Oklahoma folklife scholarship explicitly links southwestern Oklahoma with West Texas and the northwest with the Texas/Kansas Plains. It describes central Oklahoma as a meeting place of surrounding cultures, including immigrant dance traditions and urban Black musical life. Native nations and local musical practices remain distinct within this broader history.<ref name="wtx-okfolklife">[https://www.okhistory.org/publications/enc/entry?entry=FO012 Folklife], Guy Logsdon, Encyclopedia of Oklahoma History and Culture, 2010, updated 2024. Full regional/music sections consulted for cultural continuity and social use; not contemporary preference percentages.</ref>

== Genres ==
Country, Texas country/Red Dirt, Western swing, honky-tonk and roots songwriting form distinctive regional paths. Rock/pop, gospel, hip-hop/R&B and Mexican popular music broaden the picture. Czech social-dance music and specific Native repertoires identify particular communities and occasions rather than an exclusive regional soundtrack.

== Artists ==
The Maines Brothers, Joe Ely, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Terry Allen and Butch Hancock connect family performance, songwriting, country and rock. Buddy Holly and Roy Orbison remain historical gateways. Current Oklahoma discoveries should also follow the independent/local repertoire documented by KOSU and The Spy; Masopust Polka Band and the Bohemian Knights supply a different living dance connection at Yukon.<ref name="wtx-brink" /><ref name="wtx-okmusic" /><ref name="wtx-czech" />

== Boundary definition and research ==
The West Texas core includes the Panhandle, high plains and Permian Basin, with eastern New Mexico connections. In Oklahoma, the working extent follows the Historical Society's '''23 Western counties''', with its '''13 Central counties''' included as an explicitly mixed metropolitan/Cross Timbers transition. The independent published map, rather than a radio circuit, supplies this reproducible county choice.<ref name="wtx-okmap">[https://www.okhistory.org/pdf/ohs-histcontext.pdf OHS Historic Context Review], Oklahoma Historical Society, 2018/2019; text pp.185–186 and county map p.187, credited to OHS 2007. Relevant text and complete map visually inspected. Source distinguishes Western, Central and Eastern; MuGlobe combines the first two at this broad discovery scale.</ref>

Eastern Oklahoma is separately discoverable, with Ozark, southern-upland and Native-community connections. Dallas–Fort Worth requires its metropolitan account, and Paso del Norte remains distinct at the western edge. Plains connections continue into Kansas and the wider Great Plains; state and national lines are not exclusive listening walls. The source-supported regional framework is stronger than any claim of one present preference distribution, especially across rural towns, university cities and suburbs.

'''Working map outline, October 18, 2026.''' West/North Texas county framework outside the declared Central, South, East and Paso cores, southeast New Mexico, and Oklahoma Historical Society Western 23 plus Central 13 counties. The Central Oklahoma component is explicitly a mixed urban/Cross Timbers transition. Eastern Oklahoma has its own researched region. Texas/Red Dirt is a distinctive affinity, not a measured fan-field perimeter; DFW, rural and Indigenous contexts differ. The stored outline includes a 0.02-degree atlas-edge allowance and 0.001-degree topology-preserving simplification.<ref name="muglobe-working-geography">[https://www.naturalearthdata.com/downloads/10m-physical-vectors/10m-physical-labels/ Natural Earth regional atlas geography]. MuGlobe editorial drawing choices are stated above; geographic datasets do not measure musical preferences.</ref>
