== Summary ==
Visayas–Palawan brings together the central Philippine islands and Palawan as a broad musical region. Its most visible popular-music distinctions include Cebuano songwriting, Bisrock, Vispop, hip-hop and English-language bands, alongside participation in the national OPM field. Songwriter Jude Gitamondoc describes Cebu's music as a coexistence of reggae, rock, pop competition and independent songwriting networks. These are overlapping creative communities, not a single genre shared by every island. <ref name="f1">[https://billboardphilippines.com/culture/scenes/the-history-and-future-of-filipino-pop-from-folk-love-songs-to-the-p-pop-wave/ From Hotdog To SB19: The History And Future Of Filipino Pop — “On our own terms” section], Billboard Philippines.</ref>

The region also contains Ilonggo narrative song, Panay Bukidnon epic chanting, Waray social-dance repertory and several distinct Palawan traditions. Pala'wan basal, kulilal and bagit belong to a particular Indigenous musical world; they should not be used as generic names for all music of Palawan province. The useful regional emphasis is on multiple languages and island connections, including musicians who work outside their home islands while continuing to compose for their communities. <ref name="f10">[https://www.nationalmuseum.gov.ph/2022/04/10/celebrating-the-life-of-manlilikha-ng-bayan-masino-intaray/ Celebrating the life of Manlilikha ng Bayan Masino Intaray — 10 April 2022], National Museum of the Philippines, Ethnology Division.</ref> <ref name="f13">[https://originalcuyonorock.wordpress.com/2009/06/12/bulyaw-mariguen-featured-at-dypr-palawan-radyos-ronda-palawan-full-interview-here/ Bulyaw Mariguen Featured at DYPR Palawan Radyo’s Ronda Palawan — interview of 27 May 2009], Bulyaw Mariguen project; DYPR interview translated by the project.</ref>

== Contemporary and trending ==
Recent activity ranges from self-produced pop to established touring bands. In a 2024 interview, Cebu artist Shoti described his music as generally relaxed and explained that Cebuano lyrics feel especially sincere to him. His bedroom-pop song “LDR” circulated through TikTok and reached listeners elsewhere in Southeast Asia. He writes lyrics and produces beats himself; his account shows how a regional language can be part of a widely travelling recording without being its only defining feature. <ref name="f2">[https://billboardphilippines.com/music/features/sayang-kung-ldr-21-questions-with-young-cebuano-hitmaker-shoti-tiktok-2024/ “Sayang Kung LDR”: 21 Questions With Young Cebuano Hitmaker, Shoti — 2024], Billboard Philippines; Mayks Go.</ref>

Urbandub marked its twenty-fifth anniversary with performances in 2025 and announced further overseas dates for 2026. Its rerecorded debut, ''Rebirth'', revisited earlier material with a later lineup. Such activity connects Cebu's rock history to an audience distributed across the Philippines and abroad. An anniversary programme documents continuing performance rather than proving the present size of any regional market. <ref name="f4">[https://billboardphilippines.com/music/news/urbandub-25th-anniversary-year-ender-sandwich-armalite-show-gig-2025-tickets/ Urbandub To Hold 25th Anniversary Year-Ender Show With Sandwich And Armalite — 2025], Billboard Philippines; Mayks Go.</ref>

National and international repertories also meet in local performance. At UP Visayas's 2023 recognition event in Iloilo, ConChords presented songs associated with Gary Valenciano, Ryan Cayabyab and Ben&Ben alongside BTS and Dua Lipa. The programme gives a concrete example of musical coexistence rather than requiring listeners to choose between regional and global identities. <ref name="f15">[https://www.upv.edu.ph/index.php/news/conchords-perform-for-student-awardees-at-parangal-2023 ConChords perform for student-awardees at Parangal 2023 — 25 July 2023], University of the Philippines Visayas; Carlson Alelis.</ref>

Heritage practices have a contemporary public life too. Palawan State University's February 2026 arts celebration ended with communal dancing to the Cuyonon song “Solteros,” while Samar's arts activities that month included a Kuratsa Samarnon recital. These are dated examples of participation and teaching, distinct from streaming-chart evidence. <ref name="f5">[https://psu.palawan.edu.ph/news/national-arts-month-2026-ani-ng-sining-katotohanan-at-giting/ National Arts Month 2026: Ani ng Sining — 9 February 2026], Palawan State University.</ref> <ref name="f14">[https://pia.gov.ph/features/samar-celebrates-creativity-as-artists-shine-in-national-arts-month-2026/ Samar celebrates creativity as artists shine in National Arts Month 2026 — 18 February 2026], Philippine Information Agency; Aaron A. == History ==
Cebu's popular-song institutions have helped regional-language music gain a public platform. Gitamondoc recalls the Cebu Popular Music Festival as a training ground for writers and singers, and describes Vispop as an effort to connect existing Bisaya songwriting with contemporary pop approaches. Its workshops reached out to prospective composers instead of only waiting for competition entries. Rock acts such as Missing Filemon and reggae groups such as Junior Kilat formed part of the wider environment from which this movement developed. <ref name="f1" />

Other histories follow different routes. In their study of selected Cuyono songs, Edna Imelda Fernandez-Legazpi and Fe Tria-Fernandez distinguish children's songs, occupational repertory, love songs, wakes, fiestas and newly composed songs that enter collective use. Their examples connect singing to fishing, seasonal work, separation across water and community gatherings. This is a history of both inheritance and continuing composition, not an anonymous stock of unchanged melodies. <ref name="f7">[https://sil-philippines-languages.org/ical/papers/fernandez-legazpi-Cuyono%20Folk%20Songs.pdf The Sociological and Educational Significance of Selected Cuyono Folk Songs — Edna Imelda Fernandez-Legazpi and Fe Tria-Fernandez], Palawan State University; International Conference on Austronesian Linguistics paper hosted by SIL.</ref>

For Panay Bukidnon epic, teacher and culture bearer Elsie Caballero-Padernal describes learning through repeated family listening and later helping teach at the School of Living Traditions in Garangan. Her account shows how home, community instruction and written teaching materials can work together. The movement of a chant into print or a classroom supplements an embodied practice; it does not replace the chanter. <ref name="f6">[https://pjssh.upv.edu.ph/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/The-Panay-Bukidnon-Sugidanon-Epic-and-Prototype-Glossaries-for-Epic-Excerpts.pdf The Panay Bukidnon Sugidanon (Epic) and Prototype Glossaries for Epic Excerpts — Elsie Caballero-Padernal], Philippine Journal of Social Sciences and Humanities: Danyag, UP Visayas.</ref>

== Genres ==
Vispop is not limited to acoustic ballads. Kurt Fick's “Unta Tanan” uses a danceable approach whose bass, synthesizers and vocal gestures draw on disco, funk and soul. A published review connects it with his earlier shift on “DI NA.” Those recordings demonstrate the stylistic latitude available to Cebuano popular song. <ref name="f8">[https://billboardphilippines.com/music/reviews/kurt-fick-unta-tanan-review/ Kurt Fick’s Unta Tanan: Another Instant Bop From the Bisaya Superstar — review], Billboard Philippines; Kara Angan.</ref>

Dumaguete hip-hop supplies a different example. Midnasty described “Solo Na Lobo” as an experiment with drill, using an international rhythmic resource while retaining their own outlook and place attachment. Regional identity can therefore reside in language, narrative and a performing community rather than one supposedly local beat. <ref name="f3">[https://myx.global/midnasty/ Midnasty is Breaking Global Barriers From Their Dumaguete City Backyard — 15 March 2022], MYX Global.</ref>

Komposo is more strongly oriented toward unfolding narrative. In a UP Visayas workshop, Alice Tan Gonzales explained an Ilonggo model with four-line stanzas and no refrain. This makes a useful contrast with pop's recurring hooks, although the workshop description should not become an inflexible rule for every historical example. <ref name="f9">[https://www.upv.edu.ph/index.php/news/cas-day-2021-celebration-goes-virtual CAS Day 2021 celebration goes virtual], University of the Philippines Visayas.</ref>

Among the Pala'wan, basal refers to a gong ensemble, kulilal to lyrical poetry with lute and zither accompaniment, and bagit to instrumental evocations of natural sounds and movement. Their different textures and purposes matter more than grouping them under a generic “tribal music” label. <ref name="f10" /> In Samar, kuratsa joins music to a social encounter between dancers: the Santa Rita municipal account describes its place at gatherings and weddings, including gifts of money from those around the couple. <ref name="f11">[https://santarita.gov.ph/culture-sports-and-recreation/ Culture, Sports and Recreation — Traditional and Beliefs section], Municipality of Santa Rita, Samar.</ref>

Shoti's “LDR,” Kurt Fick's “Unta Tanan” and Midnasty's “Solo Na Lobo” offer three contrasting modern entry points: intimate self-production, dance-oriented song and locally identified rap. Midnasty's 2022 interview recalls the earlier labour of sending demos to radio and mixtapes to labels before its Warner-related partnership. The practical work of circulation is part of the history behind a breakthrough. <ref name="f2" /> <ref name="f3" /> <ref name="f8" />

Palawan's Bulyaw Mariguen provides a particularly clear example of migration and language. In a 2009 radio interview preserved by the band, members identified themselves as Cuyonons working or studying in Manila. They explained that their original rock songs grew from informal recording and wanted Cuyonon to be heard in contemporary music as well as inherited songs. “Ploning Adin Ka Ren” is an entry into this documented project; the old interview is not evidence of a current release schedule. <ref name="f13" />

Masino Intaray and his fellow musicians in the Basal and Kulilal Ensemble are central names in the documentation of Pala'wan music. His recognized skills extended across instruments, poetry and narrative. <ref name="f10" /> In Panay, Federico “Tuohan” Caballero's chanting and teaching remain represented in the ''Sugidanon'' publications. UP Press's 2025 ''Alayaw'' credits him alongside researchers Alicia P. Magos and Anna Razel Limoso-Ramirez, making visible the distinct contributions of performer, researcher and translator. Caballero died in 2024; publication is one part of his continuing legacy. <ref name="f12">[https://press.up.edu.ph/product/alayaw-sugidanon-epics-of-panay-book-9/ Alayaw: Sugidanon (Epics) of Panay, Book 9 — 2025], University of the Philippines Press.</ref>

== Boundary definition and research ==
The approved extent includes the Visayan islands and Palawan. It is a geographic grouping for the globe, not a claim that Palawan shares one musical identity with Cebu, Panay, Negros, Bohol, Samar or Leyte. Cebuano, Hiligaynon, Kinaray-a, Waray, Cuyonon and Indigenous repertoires require finer descriptions than this broad outline permits.

The island envelope is clipped to coastlines, with transition overlaps toward Luzon and Mindanao. Its interior divisions are editorial aids rather than ethnic boundaries or measured changes in musical preference. Cebuano-language music, national OPM and migrant musicians readily cross them. The evidence combines interviews, scholarship, community documentation and dated programmes; it establishes meaningful regional distinctions without providing comparable audience shares for every island.
