== Summary ==
Tamil South describes a connected musical public spanning Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Tamil-connected areas of northern and eastern Sri Lanka. Film songs, independent pop and rap circulate through this public alongside Carnatic concert music, devotional repertoire and local performance traditions. Chennai's gaana and Batticaloa's kooththu have distinct social settings, even though both connect song with community life. A shared language does not make those practices interchangeable. <ref name="gaana-diwakar">[https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/1536504221997873 City Music—A Reprise], Pranathi Diwakar / Contexts.</ref><ref name="batticaloa-kooththu">[https://arts.pdn.ac.lk/afcp/kuttu.php Kooththu Drama in Batticaloa], University of Peradeniya, Department of Fine Arts.</ref>

The region is also outward-facing. A. R. Rahman's career connects Chennai studios with several film industries, while Dhee, Arivu and Shan Vincent de Paul illuminate different transnational Tamil musical experiences. These connections give the region a useful cultural coherence, but its songs and audiences extend considerably beyond the shape displayed on the map. <ref name="rahman-berklee">[https://www.berklee.edu/berklee-today/berklee-today-spring-2015/expert-testimony Expert Testimony: A. Arivu's 2024 ''Valliamma Peraandi – Vol. 01'' moves among disco, drill, pop and gaana-related materials. “Thodaadha” uses a drill setting, while “Saarbaaga” brings in Gana Balachandar and Gana Chellamuthu from his Ambassa Band circle. The album includes production by Quazi Mode and a collaboration with Rashmeet Kaur. Its variety shows an artist changing musical settings while retaining attention to language, ancestry and social experience. <ref name="arivu-album">[https://rollingstoneindia.com/arivu-new-album-veliamma-peraandi-vol-01-songs/ Arivu Throws a Party for the Culture on Valliamma Peraandi – Vol. 01], Rolling Stone India / Anurag Tagat.</ref>

“Enjoy Enjaami,” released in 2021 by Dhee with Arivu and produced by Santhosh Narayanan, remains a useful earlier example of independent Tamil music's reach. Reporting connected its imagery to Arivu's grandmother's experience of migration to Ceylon. That history gives the song a relationship with Sri Lanka different from simply distributing an Indian release there. <ref name="enjoy-enjaami" />

Gaana's recorded circulation is also connected to local performance. Pranathi Diwakar's fieldwork describes musicians using digital video alongside funerals and other community events. Online presence and neighbourhood participation can reinforce one another; one does not necessarily replace the other. <ref name="gaana-diwakar" />

== History ==
Film composition provides several major historical reference points. Ilaiyaraaja's ''Annakkili'' soundtrack dates to 1976, while Rahman's ''Roja'' in 1992 opened his career as a film composer. In his Berklee interview, Rahman describes earlier studio work and a listening life that included Indian classical music, jazz and rock. He also emphasizes the director's role in shaping what music must accomplish within a film. <ref name="annakili-catalogue">[https://music.apple.com/us/album/annakkili-original-motion-picture-soundtrack-ep/1328995642 Annakkili: original motion picture soundtrack], Saregama / Apple Music.</ref><ref name="rahman-berklee" />

Concert institutions developed through a different history. The Music Academy emerged from a music conference associated with the 1927 Congress session in Madras and was inaugurated in 1928. Its annual conferences helped establish the city's December music season. Publications, discussion of musical theory and public performance together helped shape this institutional Carnatic world. <ref name="ref-ea6711ba2edc">[https://musicacademymadras.in/history/ History — Music Academy Madras], History — Music Academy Madras.</ref>

Sri Lankan traditions cannot be treated merely as extensions of Chennai's institutions. Peradeniya's documentation describes Batticaloa kooththu as a collective process involving months of rehearsal, local sponsorship and a directing annaviyar. It also records debates about moving community theatre into educational and auditorium settings. Those changes involve questions of participation and ownership as well as musical arrangement. <ref name="batticaloa-kooththu" />

Gaana uses local speech and draws on experiences including work, migration, friendship, grief and love. The India Foundation for the Arts account describes accompaniment that can include parai and everyday objects, as well as its entry into cinema. The form's relation to funerary occasions is important, but its expressive range extends beyond mourning. <ref name="gaana-ifa">[https://indiaifa.org/grants-projects/bhagath-singh.html Bhagath Singh A: Gaana research project], India Foundation for the Arts.</ref>

Diwakar's ethnography places gaana within Dalit and working-class neighbourhood experience, where humour and assertion can challenge discrimination. Her comparison with Chennai's concert institutions shows that musical boundaries within one city can also be social boundaries. Recognizing those conditions avoids reducing gaana to an entertaining rhythm borrowed by film composers. <ref name="gaana-diwakar" />

Carnatic music works through raga, tala, composition and improvisation, whereas film arrangements may organize their sounds around characters, editing and narrative situations. Kooththu combines singing, acting and dance, with instruments including mattalam, udukku and parai. These different organizing principles matter more than assigning all Tamil-language performance to one stylistic family. <ref name="ref-2b248ae646e2">[https://mtg.github.io/IAM-tutorial-ismir22/indian_art_music/iam.html Indian Art Music, Pearson/Manickavasakan ISMIR tutorial], Indian Art Music, Pearson/Manickavasakan ISMIR tutorial.</ref><ref name="rahman-berklee" /><ref name="batticaloa-kooththu" />

== Artists ==
Ilaiyaraaja's roles encompass composition, singing, conducting and lyric writing. His ''Thiruvasagam'' project, identified in the Sangeet Natak Akademi profile, connects Tamil devotional poetry with orchestral presentation. Rahman's ''Roja'' and his later Chennai-based studio and educational work provide another path into the relationship between recorded song, professional training and international production. <ref name="ilaiyaraaja-sna">[https://sangeetnatak.gov.in/public/uploads/awardees/docs/1741338685_ILAIYARAAJA.pdf Ilaiyaraaja: awardee profile], Sangeet Natak Akademi.</ref><ref name="rahman-berklee" />

Arivu's ''Valliamma Peraandi'' offers a recent album route, with Gana Balachandar and Gana Chellamuthu making the participation of gaana performers explicit. Dhee's work and Shan Vincent de Paul's ''Made in Jaffna'' project introduce different diasporic perspectives. Their coexistence is a reminder that Tamil popular music includes artists whose places of upbringing, residence and family memory do not fit neatly inside the same national border. <ref name="arivu-album" /><ref name="enjoy-enjaami" />

In kooththu, the annaviyar's combined musical and directing skills are essential. The performance belongs to an extended group of rehearsing artists and supporters, so a celebrity-only account would miss much of its authorship. <ref name="batticaloa-kooththu" />

== Boundary definition and research ==
The approved extent combines Tamil Nadu and Puducherry with an illustrative northern/eastern Sri Lankan overlay. This is a musical connection layer, not an ethnic partition or political claim. It overlaps the project's Sri Lanka region, whose wider island listening mixture remains relevant to people within the overlay.

The boundary is editor-authored and approximate. Film and independent-music sources support transnational circulation, while scholarship and cultural documentation establish specific local histories. Neither kind measures uniform audience preferences. Chennai's gaana neighbourhoods, Carnatic institutions and Batticaloa's kooththu communities have internal boundaries and connections that a broad polygon cannot reproduce; diaspora centres farther away are part of the musical network even when absent from its geometry.
