<!-- Region ID: us-alaska-southeast-northwest-coast. -->
== Summary ==
Southeast Alaska is part of a northern Northwest Coast musical world whose relationships cross into British Columbia and the Yukon. Tlingit, Haida and Tsimshian communities share regional gatherings while retaining particular languages, histories, clan songs and rights. Familiar popular music and modern Indigenous recordings coexist with these distinctive song-and-dance practices. A national border alone does not describe this cultural geography.

== Contemporary and trending ==
Large gatherings continue to connect communities and generations. Sealaska Heritage's 2024 Celebration brought together dancers and audiences in Juneau, with the Whitehorse-based Dakhká Khwáan Dancers leading the entrance and exit songs. Broadcasts and streams extended the gathering to people elsewhere.<ref name="se-celebration">[https://sealaskaheritage.org/celebration-2024-to-kick-off-next-week/ Celebration 2024 to kick off next week], Sealaska Heritage Institute, 30 May 2024. == History ==
Songs and dances carry histories, relationships and authority, often through particular clans and communities. Colonial suppression disrupted practices, but communities maintained and renewed them. Celebration, first held in 1982, became a major public setting for that renewal. Its shared stage does not dissolve local ownership or make all Northwest Coast music one repertoire.

== Genres ==
Community and clan song, drumming and dance are distinctive regional affinities. Modern Indigenous music, pop, rock, country and other familiar recordings belong to wider listening lives. Describing public traditions here does not authorize copying restricted or owned repertoire.

== Artists ==
Dakhká Khwáan Dancers, Git Hoan/Tsimshian performers and named Tlingit and Haida community groups offer different listening routes. The 2026 program includes Sitka, Juneau, Hoonah, Metlakatla, Hydaburg and other groups. Their community affiliations are part of the musical meaning, not incidental biographical labels.<ref name="se-program" />

== Boundary definition and research ==
The strongest core follows Tlingit, Haida and Tsimshian territories and present communities in Southeast Alaska and adjoining northern British Columbia, with inland Tlingit connections into Yukon. Juneau and other towns, smaller coastal communities and urban diaspora groups have different musical infrastructures while participating in regional gatherings.

UAF's traditional language territories supply the initial mapping shapes; contemporary participation supports connections across the international border. Any broader inclusion of neighboring Tagish/Tahltan areas is a geographic framework and must preserve those peoples' own identities. The source supports a connected northern Northwest Coast setting, not an exclusive present-listening perimeter. Exact unions, coastal clips and city overlaps are MuGlobe's interpretation.

'''Working map outline, October 18, 2026.''' UAF licensed GIS starting territories (Tlingit, Haida, Tsimshian, Tagish, Tahltan), approximately 1900 with 2013 GIS update, combined with separately researched living musical relationships. Modern shared repertoire, urban/rural variation and diaspora are described independently; historical language outlines are not present audience or exclusive cultural boundaries. Cross-border source components are retained. The stored outline includes a 0.02-degree atlas-edge allowance and 0.001-degree topology-preserving simplification.<ref name="muglobe-working-geography">[https://www.uaf.edu/anla/collections/map/ Indigenous Peoples and Languages of Alaska — GIS data].
