== Summary ==
South Texas and the Rio Grande borderlands form a connected musical world of cities, ranching country, small towns and binational families. Everyday listening combines Mexican regional and Latin popular music with country, pop, hip-hop and familiar English- and Spanish-language recordings. Conjunto and Tejano provide especially strong regional familiarity and attachment through dancing, family memory, radio and public gatherings. Their cultural importance does not depend on outselling every mainstream genre.<ref name="stx-pena">[https://docs.gato.txst.edu/56175/Volume_1_No_1_Musica-Tejana-Nuestra-Musica.pdf Música Tejana: Nuestra Música], Journal of Texas Music History 1(1), 2001. Conjunto remains music for participating audiences. San Antonio's 2026 Tejano Conjunto Festival combined a seniors' dance, several days of park performances and youth involvement. Its program placed established musicians beside newer bands, linking older repertoire to present social life.<ref name="stx-festival">[https://guadalupeculturalarts.org/tejano-conjunto-festival/ 44th Annual Tejano Conjunto Festival], Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center, 14–17 May 2026. Primary program documenting performers, social dancing and intergenerational participation; festival attendance is not a population preference sample.</ref> In the lower Valley, Conjunto Hall of Fame Radio and the San Benito museum explicitly connect listeners with conjunto, Tejano, norteño and related local music.<ref name="stx-radio">[https://conjuntoradio.org/ Conjunto Hall of Fame Radio], current station and museum partnership account consulted 18 October 2026. Metropolitan San Antonio and Corpus Christi, the Valley's connected suburbs, border cities and rural communities have different mixtures. Youth and family listening can move easily between current Mexican hits, international popular music and longstanding dance favorites. The regional affinity is a connection between these settings, not a demand that each sound the same.

== History ==
The accordion and bajo sexto became central to Texas Mexican working-class dance music. Commercial recording, radio, migration and changing social aspirations helped shape both conjunto and the larger, often orchestral Tejano field. Music crossed the Rio Grande through families, performances and recordings; the international boundary structured these relationships without containing them. Local scholarship explains how musical choices also expressed class and generational differences.<ref name="stx-pena" />

== Genres ==
Conjunto, Tejano, norteño, ranchera and cumbia are natural entry points. Contemporary Mexican regional music and Latin pop sit beside country, R&B, hip-hop, rock and English-language pop in the broader everyday repertoire.

== Artists ==
Santiago Jiménez Jr., Los Texmaniacs, Linda Escobar, Los García Brothers and South Texas Homies offer contrasting routes into current conjunto performance. The 2026 San Antonio program also included younger musicians and connections to Monterrey's accordion tradition. These are examples of a living regional network, not a local streaming chart.<ref name="stx-festival" />

== Boundary definition and research ==
The core includes the Lower Rio Grande Valley, Laredo and neighboring border communities, the Corpus Christi coastal plain and the South Texas ranching belt, with San Antonio an overlapping urban hub. Family and musical relationships continue to Matamoros, Reynosa, Nuevo Laredo and other northeastern Mexican border cities. This does not make every part of Tamaulipas, Nuevo León or Coahuila interchangeable with South Texas.

South Texas is an established cultural geography with strong music-specific scholarship and community recognition. MuGlobe translates that geography into counties and border-city components; those exact edges are an interpretation. Conjunto evidence supports a meaningful affinity, while urban/suburban/rural differences require a broad profile beyond that specialty. Neighboring Central Texas, West Texas, northeastern Mexico and the upper Gulf have overlapping rather than exclusive musical boundaries.

'''Working map outline, October 18, 2026.''' Declared South Texas counties from San Antonio through the Lower Rio Grande, plus a disclosed adjacent northeastern Mexican border/Monterrey corridor approximation. The river is not a musical wall; Tejano/conjunto and Mexican affinities vary within the wider mixture. Mexican extent remains approximate and overlaps existing regional introductions. The stored outline includes a 0.02-degree atlas-edge allowance and 0.001-degree topology-preserving simplification.<ref name="muglobe-working-geography">[https://www.naturalearthdata.com/downloads/10m-physical-vectors/10m-physical-labels/ Natural Earth regional atlas geography].
