Summary
Somali-language poetic, sung and popular practices connect cross-border publics while retaining regional and social differences. Qaraami, Dhaanto and women’s Buraanbur are distinct, and southern Banaadiri repertoires have substantial local and national histories. Djibouti’s Afar music is separately represented in national and Afar frames.

Afar song: Djibouti’s band, broadcast and stage histories have brought Afar and Somali performers into a shared national public without eliminating their different languages and forms. Specialist accounts also locate musical continuity in family celebrations and community participation. Institutional visibility and everyday social practice therefore belong in the history together.

Banaadiri music — Banaadiri music groups connected southern Somali coastal song and poetic practices, including community repertoires and modern public performance. The category retains local and linguistic differences rather than proposing a single sound for every coastal person. Its contribution to national musical life exceeds what a minority-population label might imply.

Afar song — Afar song here denotes an inclusive Afar-language repertoire field: poetic singing, named social dances and modern popular adaptations. The grouping recognizes connected communities across Djibouti, northeastern Ethiopia and southeastern Eritrea while retaining differences among forms and occasions. It does not propose one uniform sound for every Afar performer.

Artists
Dhaanto: Aar Maanta is a documented contemporary interpreter whose own account relates his work to Jigjiga’s dance practice. Local singers and dancers remain central to the form’s social life; the repertoire cannot be adequately represented by one touring artist.

Buraanbur: Naciima Noor, Ayan Mohamud and drummer Fatuma Jimcaale are named practitioners in the St Paul report. Rahma Hashi supplies a poet’s account of social address. Yurub Noor, a participant in the Qardho programme, articulates a younger activist use of the form. Their differing roles recognize composers, accompanists and learners.

Banaadiri music: Faduma Qaasim Hilowle, Aisha Karama Saed, composer Ali Osman “Drog” and fishing-poetry practitioner Haji Malaakh Haji appear in Salaad’s account. Axmed Naaji, who died in 2023, provides a complementary radio, band and theater history. Their roles differ, showing a wider creative field than the lead singer alone.

Hip-hop: Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five, Rakim, Public Enemy and Queen Latifah offer contrasting US entry points; OutKast, Missy Elliott and Kendrick Lamar reveal other regional and production worlds. MC Solaar, Racionais MC's, Positive Black Soul, Nasty C and Japanese group Rhymester help widen the listening frame. Artists' careers cross styles, and these names are invitations rather than national representatives or a ranking. Compare delivery, language, beat and audience address before assuming that the same broad label implies the same musical or social purpose.

Nas Jota is an important early Sudanese rap group, remembered by later practitioners within the scene’s transnational history. Kord explicitly credits the group’s influence; Walgz’s later account also places Nas Jota among the earlier generation. These links connect different eras of Sudanese rap without reducing its development to a single founder or city. <ref name="africa-recovery-sd-kord-2018">Fady Adel, Kord: Hip Hop From The Kingdom of Kush, SceneNoise, 7 February 2018.
