Summary
The Sertão nordestino is a cultural and musical interior with connected towns, countryside, markets and travel circuits. This region follows a shared but internally varied listening mixture; it is not synonymous with aridity or rural isolation.

Keyboard-led pisadinha/piseiro and electronic forró circulate through recordings, parties and sound systems alongside accordion-centred music. Musicians interviewed in 2021 describe interior-to-capital networks and varied production choices. That dated account supports circulation, not a precise 2026 audience ranking. <ref name="southamerica2026-opovo-piseiro">Bruna Forte, Aumenta o som do paredão, O Povo (19 February 2021). == History ==
Migration, commercial recording and broadcast networks connect interior musical life with coastal capitals and southeastern Brazil. Forró developed as a wider musical world encompassing several dance rhythms; older vocal practices have their own institutions and should not be collapsed into it. <ref name="southamerica2026-iphan-forro">Iphan, Sobre o forró (2026). == Genres ==
Forró eletrônico, Pisadinha / piseiro, Forró de vaquejada and Forró pé-de-serra coexist. Repente is improvised poetic dialogue; Aboio concerns cattle-related vocal practice. Their social settings differ from a dance-band genre even when musicians or festivals connect them. <ref name="southamerica2026-iphan-repente">Iphan, Repente registrado como Patrimônio Cultural do Brasil (2021). Luiz Gonzaga is a major reference for the recorded northeastern imaginary. Current musicians including Tarcísio do Acordeon and Zé Vaqueiro articulate different routes through electronic production and vaquejada identity. Local cantadores, aboiadores and ensembles remain necessary to the picture beyond commercial stars.

The working outline emphasizes the connected interior and allows overlap with Agreste. Cariri and Pajeú receive additional detail because their mixtures and institutions are locally distinctive. The Brejinho Missa do Vaqueiro documents a contemporary occasion combining aboio and forró de vaquejada. Cariri ethnography demonstrates that electronic forró is embedded in everyday rural and urban social life. Neither source surveys a sharp audience border. <ref name="southamerica2026-brejinho-vaqueiro">Prefeitura de Brejinho, 1ª Missa do Vaqueiro (2025). A connected northeastern interior from southeastern Piauí and inland Ceará/Rio Grande do Norte through Paraíba, Pernambuco and the São Francisco hinterlands to inland Bahia. An approximate cultural listening landscape, not the legal Semiárido perimeter, a climate classification, or a claim that everyone shares one taste. The eastern transition overlaps Agreste; Cariri and Pajeú provide finer local readings. Northern Minas and other uses of the word sertão are outside this particular northeastern definition.
