== Summary ==
San Diego–Tijuana is a binational musical region with closely connected but unequal urban lives. Music, media, family ties and audiences circulate across the international boundary. Its profile includes Mexican popular music, rock, electronic music, jazz and bilingual popular culture. Alejandro Madrid's research on Tijuana's Nor-tec scene explicitly examines consumption and reception within border life, providing a stronger basis for regional continuity than artist origin alone.<ref name="sdtj-madrid">[https://academic.oup.com/book/6748 Nor-tec Rifa! == Contemporary and trending ==
Mexican and wider Latin popular releases, bilingual radio and cross-border performance sit alongside English-language pop, rock, hip-hop and electronic listening. A current broadcaster explicitly serves San Diego/Tijuana and Mexicali/Imperial Valley with linked programming, evidence of a working cross-border media market rather than proof that its transmitter footprint defines taste.<ref name="sdtj-radio">[https://partymixfm.com/ Party Mix 98.9 and 106.7], Esquina 32 Radio, current station account consulted October 2026. Primary statement of bilingual/Mexican and Latin programming and binational service; promotional superlatives are not treated as audience measurements.</ref>

Contemporary shared audiences are also directly visible in binational events. The San Diego Tijuana International Jazz Festival reports participation from both cities and programs 2026 performances in San Diego, Escondido and Tijuana. This establishes an actual regional musical public for jazz, while not claiming that jazz ranks above other genres for the population.<ref name="sdtj-jazz">[https://www.sdtjjazz.org/ San Diego Tijuana International Jazz Festival], festival organizers, 2026 program and retrospective audience account. == History ==
Border radio and the movement of people have long connected the cities. Madrid describes Tijuana as a place where northern Mexican traditions, electronic techniques and multiple identities encounter one another. Nor-tec's international circulation does not erase its border meanings, nor does it make all border residents Nor-tec fans. Other connections include community dance, jazz and collaborative art music.

== Genres ==
Regional Mexican and other Latin popular music, rock, punk, electronic dance music, hip-hop and jazz all provide relevant listening routes. Nor-tec combines electronically transformed northern Mexican sounds with dance-music practice. Son jarocho and other community music can create cross-border gatherings independent of commercial popularity charts.

== Artists ==
Bostich and Fussible introduce the Nor-tec connection. Contemporary festival programs include Colectivo Fronterizo, Fémina Fatal and Charlie Chávez y su Afrotruko, alongside visiting performers. Their significance here concerns participation in a binational musical network, not a claim that they represent everyone's preferences.<ref name="sdtj-jazz" />

== Boundary definition and research ==
The strongest core is the connected San Diego and Tijuana metropolitan/coastal corridor, including Chula Vista/San Ysidro and Tijuana/Rosarito connections. North County has links through Escondido and other audience circuits. Rural eastern San Diego County, Kumeyaay homelands and all of Baja California should not automatically inherit the metro profile.

The binational region is culturally and institutionally recognized. Municipal/metropolitan boundaries are an approximate drawing proxy; the cited work supplies relationships and settings rather than an exact taste polygon. Imperial Valley–Mexicali is a related but distinct desert-border connection, not simply an eastern extension proven by one station's simulcast. US/Mexico membership is not a reason to split the core at the border.

'''Working map outline, October 18, 2026.''' Corrected Census San Diego developed urban footprint plus a disclosed original Tijuana–Rosarito urban/coastal-core approximation, land-clipped to Mexico. Scholarly reception research supplies the binational basis; the Mexican vertices are an editorial sketch, not official municipal boundaries. The stored outline includes a 0.02-degree atlas-edge allowance and 0.001-degree topology-preserving simplification.<ref name="muglobe-working-geography">[https://www.naturalearthdata.com/downloads/10m-physical-vectors/10m-physical-labels/ Natural Earth regional atlas geography].
