Summary
São Tomé and Príncipe is an island listening region shaped by local Creole dance and song, electric guitar bands and connections with other Portuguese-speaking musical publics. Ússua and socopé are distinctive local reference points, while kizomba, Lusophone pop and religious music form part of a wider mixture. The islands' small geographic scale should not be confused with cultural uniformity or isolation.

Electric-band recordings provide a particularly revealing route into this world. África Negra and Sangazuza connect local dance experience to a broader Atlantic and African popular-music circulation. Brazilian public radio's survey also presents Os Vibrados' combination of rap and socopé, demonstrating that local musical identity can remain productive within newer recorded formats.

Contemporary and trending
RTP's 2025 São Tomé and Príncipe special places island music within a current Lusophone broadcast setting. Archival circulation has also renewed access to earlier recordings: África Negra's Antologia collections and the Léve-Léve compilation have brought material from older formats to new listeners. Those releases are contemporary acts of curation, even when their recorded performances belong to earlier decades.

The radio account of Os Vibrados' rap-and-socopé mixture supplies a different example of renewal through composition and performance. These developments should be kept distinct from claims about which genre currently dominates the islands. Broadcast selection and overseas reissues reveal valuable musical relationships, but do not measure everyday preferences across age groups, religious communities or the two main islands. Local dance practice and international popular music can coexist within the same listener's repertoire.

History
The history of electric bands is closely tied to social dancing and the spaces in which people gathered to hear music. Bandcamp's interview-based feature describes the fundões, dance terraces or salons recalled by África Negra guitarist Leonídio Barros. Such settings help explain why extended grooves and ensemble interaction mattered: the recordings emerged from a culture of participatory leisure, not only from the demands of a record market.

África Negra's early releases and later compilations document a sound built around local language, guitar interplay, singing and percussion. The band's story also crosses colonial rule, independence and changing relationships with political authority. Broader Lusophone circulation linked the islands to audiences elsewhere in Africa and Portugal. That history makes kizomba and other Angolan-connected sounds intelligible as part of an ongoing exchange, while preserving the distinction between those genres and locally developed island repertoires.

Genres
The guitar-band sound heard in África Negra brings interlocking instrumental lines together with lead voice, chorus and a sustained dance pulse. Puxa and rumba are useful labels in accounts of the band's music, but the recordings also reflect a broader mixture of island and circulating dance resources. The arrangements reward attention to the way repeated parts gradually build momentum rather than treating the song only as melody over accompaniment.

Ússua and socopé refer to particular local dance worlds, not generic names for any São Toméan popular song. The combination of rap and socopé described in the radio programme shows how a named tradition can enter a new format. Kizomba belongs to another Lusophone dance conversation. Gospel and other religious music add differences of purpose and setting, reminding listeners that music on the islands is not exhausted by the dance-band recordings best documented internationally.

Repertoire distinctions
Bulawê — Bulawê, also written Bulauê, is a Santomean participatory song-and-percussion dance field. Organized groups and informal social gatherings carry a repertoire shaped through local community exchange. It is a modern local formation rather than a generic label for all island traditional music.

Dêxa — Dêxa is a specifically Príncipe song-and-dance repertoire, with local community and later conjunto interpretations. Its island identity is musically meaningful rather than a minor variant of everything performed on the more populous island of São Tomé.

Santomean Puíta — Santomean Puíta is a percussion, singing and social-dance repertoire with specific Angolan labor and migration histories in the islands. The name also identifies a principal drum, but instrument and repertoire are not identical categories.

Santomean Puxa — Puxa is a Santomean popular dance-band genre developed through the conjuntos. Local melodic and linguistic practice interacts with several Atlantic musical resources, producing a field distinct from a generic Congolese Rumba or Angolan Semba category.

Sangazuza and Os Vibrados broaden the picture through the Rádio Câmara programme. Comparing an electric ensemble with a rap-and-socopé approach brings out different ways to maintain local reference within popular music. The Léve-Léve compilation supplies further historical names and recordings. These curated routes are introductions rather than a canon that excludes community musicians, dancers or church performers whose work is less visible in internationally distributed archives.

Boundary definition and research
The approved region follows São Tomé and Príncipe's island territory and coastlines. The sea makes a clear display outline, but not a limit to the musical public: migration, recordings and broadcasting connect the islands with Portugal, Angola, Cabo Verde and other places. São Tomé and Príncipe also retain distinct community histories within the national frame.

The regional synthesis is supported by local-band documentation, broadcast surveys and Lusophone music research. Evidence is especially rich for the electric dance-band archive and less comprehensive for a current balance of all listening. Reissue catalogues cannot tell us how frequently a genre is heard today in each locality. The map therefore represents an island cultural and media network, while the article distinguishes historical recordings, present circulation and local practices rather than converting them into invented popularity percentages.
