== Summary ==
Rapa Nui has a distinct Polynesian musical public whose connections extend toward other Pacific islands and continental Chile. Oral song, dance, contemporary bands and music education coexist within that public. Rapa Nui-language repertoire carries ancestral knowledge, relationships and local histories, while performers also work with reggae, rock, Latin American styles and international popular music. Matato'a's documented combination of island compositions and these wider influences is one example of this continuing exchange. <ref name="f1">[https://www.sigpa.cl/ficha-individual/federico-pate-tuki Federico Pate Tuki], SIGPA / Servicio Nacional del Patrimonio Cultural.</ref><ref name="f2">[https://www.musicapopular.cl/grupo/matatoa/ Matato’a], Milena Bahamonde, MúsicaPopular.cl.</ref>

The island should therefore be heard through both its inherited repertoires and its living musicians. A staged dance associated with Rapa Nui abroad is only one part of the picture. The Toki school, contemporary recording artists and the work of older song specialists show different ways people sustain, reinterpret and teach music. None alone defines what every island resident listens to. <ref name="f1" /><ref name="f3">[https://tokirapanui.org/historia/ Historia], ONG Toki Rapa Nui.</ref>

== Contemporary and trending ==
Recent musical activity includes education as well as commercial release. Toki's institutional history records its school orchestra's first national tour in 2024, followed in 2025 by expanded community teaching and the graduation of its first pianist trained entirely on Rapa Nui. Its news archive also documents a 2025 Tapati workshop and performances by teachers. These activities connect young performers with both local cultural occasions and opportunities beyond the island. <ref name="f3" /><ref name="f4">[https://tokirapanui.org/noticias/ Noticias], ONG Toki Rapa Nui.</ref>

Yoyo Tuki's release catalogue includes the 2024 singles Moai and Una Estrella (Live), alongside Hoko Manu and earlier albums. His own biography describes songwriting in Rapa Nui, Spanish and English and collaboration with Small Island Big Song. The catalogue establishes ongoing release activity; the artist biography supplies his account of the work's cultural orientation, rather than an independently measured claim to island-wide popularity. <ref name="f5">[https://open.spotify.com/artist/25bL0NKwJJaG5MckXgllVL Yoyo Tuki release catalogue], Spotify / Yoyo Tuki.</ref><ref name="f6">[https://yoyotuki.com/bio Yoyo Tuki — Bio], Yoyo Tuki.</ref>

Tapati remains an important point of musical visibility, but its performances are not equivalent to a daily listening census. The municipality's 2025 inaugural-gala record and Toki's preparation for the festival identify organized local participation. They provide a concrete context for meeting performers whose work also continues in teaching, rehearsals and recordings outside festival season. <ref name="f4" /><ref name="f7">[https://www.rapanui.net/noticias/19848 Gala inaugural Tapati Rapa Nui 2025], Municipalidad de Rapa Nui.</ref>

== History ==
Rapa Nui's repertoire reflects both cultural survival and adaptation. The heritage profile of Federico Pate Tuki describes how songs preserved knowledge through periods of coercion and disruption, and how he learned older repertoire from his brother Luis Avaka Paoa. Recording and transcribing words became part of his work of transmission, alongside remembering, composing and performing. This history places island knowledge holders at the centre of preservation. <ref name="f1" />

Exchange within Polynesia also matters. Chile's national library describes sau sau as a locally established dance-song of apparent Samoan origin, and tamuré as a Tahitian form that became prominent on Rapa Nui in the 1960s. A practice can become deeply associated with island identity through adaptation without having existed there unchanged for centuries. <ref name="f8">[https://www.memoriachilena.gob.cl/602/w3-article-92450.html Danzas de Rapa Nui], Memoria Chilena / Biblioteca Nacional de Chile.</ref>

Later bands carried Rapa Nui music into other media. Matato'a formed in 1996, and its E nua e koro reached Chilean television through Iorana. Its albums and festival appearances extended into New Caledonia, Tahiti and other international settings. This was a route of contemporary circulation across several Pacific and commercial networks. <ref name="f2" />

== Genres ==
A useful first distinction is between recitation, sung repertoire and song-dance, while recognizing that local categories overlap. The Rapa Nui discussion in Austronesian Soundscapes describes patautau recitations, often associated with kai kai string figures, and riu as sung texts that may come from longer recitations or be composed for particular occasions. Such forms connect verbal knowledge with performance and memory. <ref name="f9">[https://csrm.uq.edu.au/media/docs/560/AustronesianSoundscapes.pdf Austronesian Soundscapes: Performing Arts in Oceania and Southeast Asia], Edited by Birgit Abels, scholarly volume hosted by University of Queensland.</ref>

Sau sau and tamuré foreground dance, gesture and a recreational setting. They should be distinguished from every other item described broadly as Rapa Nui traditional music. The national library also notes performances in which arm and hand movement interprets a song without the dancer travelling across the performance space. Here movement is part of the text's presentation, not simply accompaniment to a beat. <ref name="f8" />

Band music adds other combinations. Matato'a's documented line-up includes voices, guitars, ukulele, percussion, harmonica and cuatro, and its repertoire draws on reggae and rock as well as Polynesian and Latin American music. These are specific arranged sounds within the regional field, rather than evidence that oral-song traditions have disappeared. <ref name="f2" />

Federico Pate Tuki, known as Koro Kutu, was recognized as a Living Human Treasure in 2011 and died in 2021. His heritage record describes his recovery and composition of riu and ute, recording remembered songs for his daughter to transcribe. He is an essential figure for understanding musical transmission as a family and community practice. <ref name="f1" />

Yoyo Tuki provides a contrasting contemporary route through songwriting, guitar and cross-island collaboration. His participation in Small Island Big Song is documented in the project's 2019 film credits, which connect musicians across the Pacific and Indian Oceans. The collaboration places Rapa Nui within an oceanic exchange without implying that all participating traditions have the same sound or history. <ref name="f6" /><ref name="f10">[https://www.smallislandbigsong.com/film Small Island Big Song — Feature Film], Small Island Big Song, 2019 film.</ref>

Mahani Teave, pianist and a founder of Toki, represents another part of island musical life. Toki describes its mission as bringing classical music and ancestral traditions into education. Her work, alongside that of fellow founder and musician Enrique Icka, broadens the regional account beyond tourist dance shows or a narrow definition of popular recording. <ref name="f3" /><ref name="f11">[https://tokirapanui.org/en/que-es/ Toki School of Music and the Arts: What is it?], ONG Toki Rapa Nui.</ref>

== Boundary definition and research ==
The approved footprint isolates Rapa Nui's land area from continental Chile. The surrounding envelope is a practical way to locate the island on a world map, not a border around Polynesian identity, Indigenous rights or the reach of its musicians. Chilean administrative affiliation and Pacific cultural relationships are different dimensions of the same regional story; neither should be used to erase the other.

The evidence combines island institutions, an artist's own account, heritage documentation, scholarship and recorded-release metadata. It supports a distinct Rapa Nui musical sphere and several forms of outward exchange, but it does not establish listener shares or a single currently dominant genre. The museum's William Mulloy Library also maintains an audio archive of island music, offering a further route for research with appropriate performer and community context. Archival holdings should be investigated as situated recordings, not treated as an exhaustive inventory of living practice. <ref name="f12">[https://www.patrimoniocultural.gob.cl/en/regional-museums/easter-island-anthropological-museum Easter Island Anthropological Museum], Servicio Nacional del Patrimonio Cultural.</ref>
