== Summary ==
Québec is a distinctive musical region partly because French-language songwriting, recording and public performance form a substantial shared cultural world. Chanson, pop, rock and rap coexist with traditional dance music and international repertoire. The history of the chansonniers and the boîtes à chansons supplies one important lineage, but it does not encompass every musical public in the province.<ref name="qcchanson">[https://actualites.uqam.ca/2017/en-classe-la-bolduc-charlebois-un-cours-sur-la-chanson/ «En classe!»: de la Bolduc à Charlebois], Université du Québec à Montréal.</ref><ref name="qcsocan2025">[https://www.magazinesocan.ca/news/adisq-2025-quatre-autres-felix-pour-lou-adriane-cassidy/ Adisq 2025: Quatre autres Félix pour Lou-Adriane Cassidy], SOCAN, Paroles & Musique.</ref>

Indigenous music creates additional connections and distinctions. Florent Vollant and Claude McKenzie’s Kashtin brought Innu-language work to a wide audience, while Elisapie’s Inuktitut adaptations connect Nunavik memories with familiar international songs. These are contemporary creative relationships, not marginal survivals outside Québec’s modern musical life.<ref name="vollant">[https://www.ordre-national.gouv.qc.ca/membres/membre.asp?id=3542 Florent Vollant], Ordre national du Québec.</ref><ref name="elisapiealbum">[https://www.bonsound.com/fr/release/inuktitut/ Inuktitut], Bonsound.</ref>

The 2025 ADISQ ceremonies highlighted Lou-Adriane Cassidy’s songwriting and performance, with other appearances spanning generations and genres. SOCAN’s reporting described rap performances by Sarahmée and Rymz and a country delegation including Matt Lang, Krystel Mongeau, Francis Degrandpré and Clément Jacques. The event makes visible a varied professional field rather than one homogeneous French-language pop sound.<ref name="qcsocan2025" />

Language remains a medium for reinterpretation as well as new composition. Elisapie’s 2023 ''Inuktitut'' reworked ten rock and pop songs through memories of people and experiences in Nunavik. Her label’s catalogue records a further Cranberries adaptation, “Sinnatuumakka (Dreams),” in September 2026. Familiar imported songs can therefore become vehicles for Inuit language and personal memory.<ref name="elisapiealbum" /><ref name="elisapie2026">[https://www.bonsound.com/en/artist/elisapie/ Elisapie — artist and release catalogue], Bonsound.</ref>

Traditional music also develops through teaching and experimentation. Québec’s cultural inventory describes foot-percussion workshops, camps and digital experiments alongside informal learning at gatherings, showing that transmission is an active process rather than a fixed historical display.<ref name="qcpodo">[https://www.patrimoine-culturel.gouv.qc.ca/rpcq/detail.do?id=83&methode=consulter&type=imma Podorythmie], Répertoire du patrimoine culturel du Québec.</ref>

== History ==
Félix Leclerc’s success in Paris in 1950 helped establish an international path for Québec songwriting; “Moi, mes souliers” received a major French recording award the following year. His example became important to later singer-songwriters. Small boîtes à chansons provided settings in which words, personality and an attentive audience could be central to performance.<ref name="felixleclerc">[https://www.ordre-national.gouv.qc.ca/membres/membre.asp?id=42 Félix Leclerc], Ordre national du Québec.</ref><ref name="qcchanson" />

The history then moved through stylistic change rather than a simple replacement of tradition by commerce. UQAM’s account follows the transition from earlier song figures to the chansonniers and Robert Charlebois’s break with established aesthetics. Rock and countercultural expression expanded what a locally recognizable popular song could sound like.<ref name="qcchanson" />

Traditional music experienced its own renewal. From the 1970s, groups including Le Rêve du Diable and La Bottine souriante gave foot percussion a prominent ensemble role. In a separate but overlapping history, Vollant helped establish Innu Nikamu and formed Kashtin with McKenzie; their recordings from 1989 onward connected community language and a wider music industry.<ref name="qcpodo" /><ref name="vollant" />

== Genres ==
Chanson gives particular weight to the relationship between text, singer and interpretation. Its institutional history includes intimate venues, while later popular music draws on amplified bands and studio production. Rap similarly makes language and phrasing central, but works through different rhythmic and production conventions. Québec’s contemporary award performances show these approaches sharing a public stage with country.<ref name="qcchanson" /><ref name="qcsocan2025" />

Traditional dance music has another rhythmic vocabulary. Podorythmie is seated foot percussion on a hard surface; it accompanies tunes and songs and differs from gigue, which is primarily a dance. Its exact origins remain uncertain. In performance, footwork can function as an instrument in its own right, reinforcing or elaborating the pulse beneath a melody.<ref name="qcpodo" />

Inuktitut and Innu music should not be grouped as one Indigenous genre. Elisapie’s translated rock and pop songs and Kashtin’s original recordings arise from different languages and communities, even though both demonstrate the creative importance of language within contemporary recorded music.<ref name="elisapiealbum" /><ref name="vollant" />

== Artists ==
Leclerc provides a foundational songwriter entry point, while Charlebois illustrates the transformation of Québec song through new stage and musical attitudes. A broader historical canon also includes artists such as Harmonium and Leonard Cohen, placed alongside francophone popular music in the McCord Museum’s account of Québec’s musical history. Regional belonging is thus wider than a single language or style.<ref name="felixleclerc" /><ref name="qcchanson" /><ref name="mccordmusic">[https://www.musee-mccord-stewart.ca/app/uploads/2015/03/pr_musique_en.pdf Music — Quebec: From Charlebois to Arcade Fire], McCord Museum.</ref>

La Bottine souriante, Alain Lamontagne, Jean-François Berthiaume and De Temps Antan illuminate different uses of foot percussion and traditional ensemble practice. Florent Vollant’s recordings with Kashtin—''Kashtin'', ''Innu'' and ''Akua Tuta''—provide a contrasting route through Innu popular music.<ref name="qcpodo" /><ref name="vollant" />

Lou-Adriane Cassidy, Sarahmée, Rymz and the country performers featured in 2025 show the contemporary breadth of the public stage. Elisapie’s “Uummati Attanarsimat (Heart of Glass)” is a particularly clear example of recognizable international repertoire acquiring a different linguistic and personal setting.<ref name="qcsocan2025" /><ref name="elisapiealbum" />

== Boundary definition and research ==
The approved region follows Québec’s provincial extent, with an overlapping Inuit Arctic region in the north. This broad frame is useful for French-language media and music institutions, but Montréal, Québec City, the Côte-Nord, rural districts and northern communities do not constitute one uniform scene.

Francophone circulation extends into Acadian and Franco-Ontarian communities and overseas, while Indigenous relationships cross provincial borders in different ways. The Inuit overlay helps preserve one important distinction without claiming to represent all Indigenous territories. This editorial outline is a visual aid for a supported regional synthesis, not a language border, a political claim or a measurement of which music each community prefers.
